Preschool After-School Programs

Our Preschool after-school program provides a safe, fun and supportive environment where children have the opportunity to explore their interests, have positive social interactions, learn to process and regulate their emotions, and gain confidence in their growing independence.

Enrichments

After-school Enrichment classes are intended to be an exploration of a creative subject or sport without goals of deep study or mastery — although physical and mental resilience and contentedness may result. The offerings for this school level have been honed over many years to create a relaxing and fun space for those of us newest to school life.

Students in our pre-kindergarten program can enjoy Enrichments after school from 1–2 p.m. Enrichment instructors gather students directly from their classroom, and pick-up is in the room where the enrichment class occurs. All details and registration are available via the Veracross Parent Portal.

Options For Kindergarten Students

Kindergartners may attend the Extended Day program from dismissal at 2:30 p.m. and stay until 6 p.m. Enrichment classes are also available from 2:30–4 p.m.

Extended Day

Extended Day teachers meet children at dismissal in the Preschool at 2:30 p.m. and make their way to the Lower School gym and playground area. Enrichments

After-school Enrichments for kindergartners are selected with particular attention to course content and expectations appropriate for students’ capacities after a full day at school. These classes are intended to be an exploration of a creative subject or sport without goals of deep study or mastery — although physical and mental resilience and contentedness may result. Enrichment offerings vary widely to suit a variety of interests — from classes focusing on art and gymnastics, to Chinese language and chess.

Each day directly after school, a staff member from our Extended Day program gathers all kindergartners enrolled in an Enrichment. We unwind a bit and make our way to meet up with the Lower Schoolers and Enrichment instructors. Kindergarten Enrichments are from 2:45–4 p.m. Pick-up is around back in the Brumley Performing Arts Building car line.

Chess is a natural fit for young learners. With the help of DA chess coach/teacher Craig Jones, most children can learn the basics in a couple of hours. While some young DA chess players choose to play solely recreationally, many have found great success in playing competitively, with DA’s K-1 chess team winning a national championship-level title in 2017.
