Twenty-four members of Durham Academy's Class of 2017 were honored for success in all facets of campus life, including academics, arts, athletics and service at the senior awards assembly on Thursday.

Twenty Durham Academy seniors were granted membership in the school's chapter of the Cum Laude Society — the highest academic honor that the school can bestow — on Monday. The distinction is made in recognition of students' grades, strength of academic schedule and contributions to campus intellectual life.

Seniors Ellie Dusek, Lily Tendler and Niall Schroder have been selected as Triangle Rising Stars Awards finalists for the Best Actor/Actress categories, and the school's production of She Loves Me has been selected as one of four finalists for Best Musical.

Fourteen DA students are among student-athletes from across the nation selected for the Optimal Performance Associates Winning Team/Keith Waldman NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) High School National Academic Squad.

Durham Academy senior Sam Kim is a semifinalist in the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which recognizes graduating high school seniors' academic and artistic accomplishments. He is among 722 students from across the country — 20­­­­­ of whom are North Carolinians — selected to advance to the final round of the prestigious competition.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized 16 Durham Academy seniors as finalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. DA's finalist pool is larger than any in at least the last five years, and is among of the largest in school history.

The Daughters of the American Revolution's General Davie Chapter has honored DA senior Natalie Giduz with its Good Citizens Award.

Wearing a rainbow of baseball caps and shirts — from Michigan, Duke and Carolina blues, to East Carolina Pirate purple, to the maroons favored by Roanoke and Elon — six Durham Academy senior student-athletes committed to compete in college athletics at a signing ceremony in the lobby of Kirby Gym on Thursday.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized 10 Durham Academy seniors as semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Most Durham Academy Upper School and Middle School classrooms were empty for much of the second week of school, but, out in the great classroom of the world, students learned some of the most important lessons of the year.

For the fourth year in a row, Durham Academy was awarded the School of Excellence Award in Debate. This recognition places DA in the Top 20 Schools in the National Tournament out of the 1200 schools represented. Seniors Loften Deprez and Eilene Yang place third overall.

Durham Academy Upper School faculty honored nearly 40 freshmen, sophomores and juniors for academic achievement, effort and enthusiasm at the annual honors assembly on Thursday.

Durham Academy's varsity athletic teams went deep into N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association spring tournaments and meets, with girls lacrosse placing second in the state; girls soccer finishing as a semifinalist; boys tennis finishing as a semifinalist, with a school-record 20 victories along the way; boys lacrosse finishing as a quarterfinalist; the boys golf team placing seventh; and the girls and boys track teams finishing 14th and ninth, respectively. The spring season capped a fantastic year for DA athletics, which finished sixth of 24 NCISAA 3A schools in the Wells Fargo Cup standings for the 2015-2016 school year.

In what Durham Academy speech and debate coach Crawford Leavoy calls "the best result of any DA team at the Tournament of Champions in the 11 years of the program," seniors Loften Deprez and Eilene Yang were named champions of the International Public Forum competition at the late-April tournament. Six DA students qualified to compete in the event, recognized as among the four national championships held each year for the high school speech and debate community.

There's a lot that goes into the three seconds between when Christy Cutshaw hurtles toward the edge of the diving platform and when she slips into the water with nary a splash. Throwing her arms down with force, she begins to flip. Tucks into the pike position. Spins once, twice, three times, taking notice of the water below each time. Unravels from her pike, her body as straight and vertical as a pin. Readies herself to enter the water — hands flat to make an opening for her body, creating only the tiniest of splashes. Oh, and it all happens while her synchronized diving partner performs each step at the very exact, same millisecond.

Five Durham Academy juniors have been selected to attend Governor's School of North Carolina's 2016 program. The five-and-one-half-week program is the nation's oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students.
An independent, coeducational day school, pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
