Enthusiasm practically bubbles out the door of Ashley Hinton's second grade classroom, which is understandable because she comes from a family of teachers — her great-grandfather, both of her grandmothers, her mother and her aunts have all been teachers. But Hinton set off on a different path when she headed to college, in part because there were so many teachers in her family.

Take a family hike in the woods and read a story together while you're enjoying being outdoors. That's the essence of StoryWalk, set for Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brumley Family Nature Preserve, located in Orange County approximately two miles southeast of Hillsborough.

Join with fellow parents, students and faculty on Friday, May 4, for a fun night of baseball and friendship at Durham Bulls Athletic Park — DA Night at the Durham Bulls! In addition, it's Star Wars Night, and the game will be followed by fireworks, so you won't want to miss it!

Widespread participation from all corners of the Durham Academy community — parents, faculty, staff, alumni, grandparents and students — resulted in DA Giving Day 2018 exceeding all expectations Tuesday. By the stroke of midnight, 922 donors in 27 states had generously contributed $130,353 to support the Durham Academy Fund.

Tuesday, March 6, marks Durham Academy's largest single-day fundraising effort, DA Giving Day. It's an invitation to everyone in the DA community — parents, teachers, staff, grandparents, alumni and students — to come together to support the school.

What used to be a Lower School computer lab is now the Lower School TED lab, but far more has changed than the name. The TED lab — an abbreviation for technology, engineering and design — still has 20 desktop computers, but the focus has changed from learning how to use a computer to using a computer as a tool.

When Kristin Stroupe picks up her iPhone, two faces smile back at her: Stroupe's own beaming face and the equally beaming face of her high school coach and mentor, Leigh Cooper Wallace. She helped change the course of Stroupe's life and inspired her to impact the lives of others.

Kristen Klein will serve as Durham Academy's next assistant head of school, Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner announced on Monday. Klein, who now serves as Upper School director at Pittsburgh's Winchester Thurston School, will begin her tenure at DA July 1, 2018.

Durham Academy is turning off the legacy (blue) Veracross portal in favor of the newly designed parent portals. No longer will you have to click the "Full Site" link on your phone; the new, responsive Veracross Parent Portal is fully functional, whether you are using a desktop computer or smartphone.

Cindy Moore never doubted that she wanted to work with kids. "I was always a babysitter. I was always the person that the adults in my life left in charge of kids. I always have loved kids, even when I was a kid. I knew that I wanted to do something related to kids. I think I actually knew that it was either a psychologist or a pediatrician, and I was afraid of medical school."

Bundle Up Durham — an organization started by Durham Academy Upper School students that provides winter coats to children in need — has partnered with DA basketball to sponsor a coat drive and T-shirt sale surrounding the first varsity basketball home game Friday, Nov. 17.

A curious sight greeted Durham Academy Lower Schoolers at the beginning of this school year: a white "room" that materialized under their staircase while they'd been away for summer break. It didn't take long for this mysterious room to begin to take on a new appearance — a very colorful and creative one.

Maintenance foreman Randy Baker has been working at Durham Academy for 37 years and is the father of a DA graduate, but were it not for a head poking around the corner of the business office, Baker wouldn't be here at all.
