For 11 years, the highlight of the year for many sixth-graders has been the "My Hero" project, in which students create pop-up books to honor special people in their lives. This year's sixth-graders have been hard at work on their books with artist-in-residence Peg Gignoux, and they're almost ready to present their work to the world.

This week's edition of Cavs Corner includes part 1 of our spring sports season preview, featuring our boys tennis, baseball, softball and girls lacrosse teams. The boys lacrosse team opened the season Wednesday with an instant-classic 15-14 loss to defending state champs Christ School, and the baseball team walked off with a win over Norfolk Academy on Monday.

Widespread participation from all corners of the Durham Academy community — parents, faculty, staff, alumni, grandparents and students — resulted in DA Giving Day 2018 exceeding all expectations Tuesday. By the stroke of midnight, 922 donors in 27 states had generously contributed $130,353 to support the Durham Academy Fund.

Karl Schaefer views his life as "a long, circular path," from childhood on a farm in Wisconsin to home now on a 10-acre farm in Efland. Along the way he has been a railroad worker in the Midwest, dipped ice cream in Massachusetts and sold Toyotas in Kansas before finding his way to North Carolina as a teacher.

It can be tempting for parents to focus on the negatives of tweens and teens' social media usage. The minutes that can add up to hours of distraction each day. The feelings that can be hurt by a peer's insensitive post. The danger of personal information getting into the wrong hands.

Tuesday, March 6, marks Durham Academy's largest single-day fundraising effort, DA Giving Day. It's an invitation to everyone in the DA community — parents, teachers, staff, grandparents, alumni and students — to come together to support the school.

One after the other, they funneled their emotions — frustration, hope, grief, anger, love, disappointment — into the microphone. A bright spotlight cast upon the students on stage obscured the fact, at least for a few minutes, that Durham Academy Middle School's Taylor Hall was packed with a couple hundred fellow middle schoolers who were hanging on their every word.

Durham Academy's three Science Olympiad teams left the regional tournament, held Feb. 3 in Raleigh, with three impressive showings: The Upper School varsity team brought home a fourth-place trophy, 17 medals and a berth in the state tournament; the Upper School junior varsity team placed third among JV teams and earned 10 medals; and the Middle School team placed sixth, won medals in 12 events and qualified for the state tournament.

Kristen Klein will serve as Durham Academy's next assistant head of school, Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner announced on Monday. Klein, who now serves as Upper School director at Pittsburgh's Winchester Thurston School, will begin her tenure at DA July 1, 2018.

Durham Academy is turning off the legacy (blue) Veracross portal in favor of the newly designed parent portals. No longer will you have to click the "Full Site" link on your phone; the new, responsive Veracross Parent Portal is fully functional, whether you are using a desktop computer or smartphone.

Cindy Moore never doubted that she wanted to work with kids. "I was always a babysitter. I was always the person that the adults in my life left in charge of kids. I always have loved kids, even when I was a kid. I knew that I wanted to do something related to kids. I think I actually knew that it was either a psychologist or a pediatrician, and I was afraid of medical school."

Bundle Up Durham — an organization started by Durham Academy Upper School students that provides winter coats to children in need — has partnered with DA basketball to sponsor a coat drive and T-shirt sale surrounding the first varsity basketball home game Friday, Nov. 17.

Durham Academy's fall 2017 sports season came to a close on Saturday in the most thrilling of fashions — with a nail-biting, come-from-behind victory by the varsity girls tennis team in the state championship matchup. It's the first state title ever for DA's girls tennis program and the first state championship earned by any DA team since 2012.

Durham Academy's Board of Trustees has approved a multi-phased Middle School campus master plan that touches every building on the Academy Road campus. The plan creates new academic and community spaces, reorients the campus for cohesiveness and safety, and supports rather than inhibits the Middle School learning experience. When completed, this plan will transform the Middle School experience with a campus designed purposefully for the intellectual, developmental and physical needs of young adolescents.

The girls, all fifth-graders, live in all corners of Durham. They attend different schools, have different interests, face different challenges. But, most every day, you'll find the girls messaging one another to check in on how school is going, to send birthday wishes, to just say goodnight. They come cheer one another on at musical performances. They send each other letters when times get tough.

Maintenance foreman Randy Baker has been working at Durham Academy for 37 years and is the father of a DA graduate, but were it not for a head poking around the corner of the business office, Baker wouldn't be here at all.

The entire Durham Academy community will join together to raise funds for hurricane relief from Oct. 17 to 20 with a series of fundraisers. Please support students' efforts as you are able! All proceeds will be donated to One America Appeal to support recovery from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, with the exception of the Middle School's film screening; proceeds from that event will be split between One America Appeal and a foundation that supports residents of St. Maarten.
