Parents Association & Parents Council
The Durham Academy Parents Association supports the school's academic, social, fine arts and athletic objectives. Parents Association encourages volunteerism, raises and disperses funds, promotes communication and cooperation, and provides input to the school on issues of concern and interest to parents. All Durham Academy parents are members of the Parents Association.
The Durham Academy Parents Council is the governing board of the Parents Association. This group comprises members of an executive committee; division representatives; members of schoolwide committees on matters such as diversity, wellness and athletics; and parents who organize both community-building and fundraising events. See a list of the parents who serve on Parents Council.

DA Giving Day 2019 marked an astounding day of generosity! Widespread participation from all corners of the Durham Academy community — parents, faculty, staff, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni and friends — exceeded all expectations on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, 1,083 donors in 30 states (as well as the Netherlands and the UK!) had generously contributed $165,569 to support the Durham Academy Fund. Several gifts even trickled in on Thursday, which pushed the totals to 1,084 donors and $168,569 raised!
Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make the effort such a success, from those who donated and offered matching gifts, to those who helped spread the word via email and social media, to those who held up Giving Day signs in frigid temperatures during drop-off and pick-up.
At just two minutes past 10 p.m., the original Giving Day goal of 1,000 gifts — which unlocked a $20,000 challenge gift offered by a generous donor — had been surpassed, and the DA community kept the momentum going through the night.
We were thrilled to see our faculty and staff represented heavily once again and delighted to see the names of our alumni popping up on the Giving Day landing page to make gifts in honor of their incredible teachers, coaches and mentors. You can watch some of the highlights of the day below:
Parents, alumni and parents of alumni rallied around several participation challenges.
New donors doubled their gifts, scoring a dollar-for-dollar match up to $3,000 for every new gift made thanks to Selene and Zankhna Parekh.
Every gift from DA parents and parents of alumni made in honor of a current or former DA faculty, staff member or coach was matched dollar-for-dollar up to $6,000 by an anonymous donor.
Alumni gifts made in honor of a favorite teacher/staff member/coach earned them a delicious DA-themed cookie to enjoy, along with a note that included the donor’s name and class year.
Cavs who graduated from 2009 to 2018 made a gift that was doubled by a dollar-for-dollar match up to $1,750 and they were entered into a raffle for a $100 Amazon gift card. Thank you Stephen Barringer '81 and congratulations to raffle winner Worth Newman ’09!
Alumni who made a gift to the DA Fund were entered into a drawing for a $200 Marriott gift card, with Jane Stewart Hamlin ’94 winning the Marriott gift card.
Alumni who made a gift between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. were entered in two drawings for some DURM gear from local retail and lifestyle brand Runaway. Congratulations to winners Abby Carey-Ewend ’17 and Khari Williams ’14!
And thanks to incredible levels of #DAGivingDay participation from parents of Pre-k and kindergarten students, the entire Preschool is getting a Local Yogurt truck party!
Alumni engagement was strong across decades, with classes from 1964 to 2018 participating. The Classes of 1994 and 1998 tied for the top participation with 21 gifts made online; the Class of 1999 raised the most money ($7,890); and more than $47,000 was raised by alumni overall.
#DAGivingDay is here! Many of you know me as a Duke Basketball manager, a Fuqua MBA, or the founder of @NextPlayCareer. Without the unwavering support of faculty and friends at @DurhamAcademy, I would not be any of those things. I give to help others have the same opportunity. pic.twitter.com/zuN8sQ4jOR— Kyle Mumma (@kmumma1) March 5, 2019
Special thanks to the volunteers from the DA Fund Committee, the DA Parents Association and the 60+ leaders of Parents Council, and the DA Alumni Board, who all helped pave the path to success.
