Parents Association & Parents Council

The Durham Academy Parents Association supports the school's academic, social, fine arts and athletic objectives. Parents Association encourages volunteerism, raises and disperses funds, promotes communication and cooperation, and provides input to the school on issues of concern and interest to parents. All Durham Academy parents are members of the Parents Association.

The Durham Academy Parents Council is the governing board of the Parents Association. This group comprises members of an executive committee; division representatives; members of schoolwide committees on matters such as diversity, wellness and athletics; and parents who organize both community-building and fundraising events. Speech and Debate Team Caps 2018 with Successes

Members of Durham Academy’s speech and debate team have had an active November and December, closing out 2018 with successes in several local and national tournaments.



Northwest Guilford High School (Greensboro)
  • Alex Hoffman: Champion — Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Asia Crowley: Champion — JV Congressional Debate

  • Anna Brent-Levenstein and Emily Norry: Second Place — JV Public Forum
George Mason University (Fairfax, Virginia)

Each year, the GMU Forensics team hosts Patriot Games, one of the largest tournaments in the Mid-Atlantic. There are regularly more than 1,000 competitors representing 150 schools. This year, the team had its best finish ever, with DA placing fifth in Overall Sweepstakes.

The Glenbrooks (Northbrook and Glenview, Illinois)

Among the most prestigious tournaments of the year is The Glenbrooks, hosted by Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools in the northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.  

  • Adriana Kim and Andrew Owens: Octafinalists (top 16 out of 167 teams) — Public Forum (out of 167 teams)
  • Adriana Kim: Sixth Speaker — Public Forum out of 334 Competitors
  • Andrew Owens : 20th Speaker — Public Forum
  • Emily Donaldson: Finalist (Top 20) — Congressional Debate out of 232 Competitors
  • Yaakov Huba: Quarterfinalist (Top 24) — Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Nathan Dalva-Baird and Sheridan Kum: Fourth Place — Public Forum at the Glenbrooks Round Robin
  • Nathan Dalva-Baird: Third Speaker — Public Forum at the Glenbrooks Round Robin
Dogwood Speech and Debate League #3: Fayetteville

Students participated in the third qualifying leg to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Championship.  This serves as an important step toward qualification to the national championship. As a team, DA placed third in Team Sweepstakes.
