It is a busy week in athletics as our teams return from Thanksgiving break ready to dive right back into their seasons. Both basketball teams are on winning streaks heading into this weekend’s big games against Charlotte teams, while our swim team, led by new coach Sarah Chaires, will have its first meet this afternoon. Our third DA Athletic Hall of Fame class will be inducted at halftime of Friday night’s boys basketball game vs. Charlotte Latin.

Boys hoops impressive in four-game winning streak

The DA boys will put their four-game winning streak to the test on Friday night as they host 1-2 Charlotte Latin. The Hawks are coming off a 56-50 win on Tuesday over Southlake Christian, the only team that has beaten the Cavs this year. Since our last Cavs Corner, the DA boys notched a 75-63 win over Rabun Gap, a 71-47 win over Voyager Academy and Tuesday’s 73-32 win over the Durham Flight. Junior guard Bryant Randleman had back-to-back spectacular performances with career highs of 30 points and 15 rebounds against Rabun Gap and a near triple-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists against Voyager. Randleman is the current team leader in scoring average (17.0 ppg) rebounds (7.7 rpg), assists (3.6 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). Junior guard Michael Savarino has elevated his game recently with an 18-point, 7-rebound performance against Voyager that was especially noteworthy because he left the game midway through the first half after being inadvertently elbowed in the face by a teammate. Savarino returned to shoot 5-6 from 3-point land before receiving stitches after the game.

Highlights of the Cavs’ win over Voyager are below.

In Tuesday night’s win over the Flight, all 12 Cavaliers saw at least eight minutes of action, and 11 players scored baskets as the Cavs overcame a sluggish start to cruise to a 41-point win.  While Randleman led the Cavs with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, Savarino (10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and senior Tyler Carpenter (10 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals) joined him in double-figure scoring. Ninth-grader Cole Sinclair had his most productive game of the season with a 9-point, 2-rebound, 5-steal, 4-assist effort on the night. Junior Henry Rogers came off the bench to contribute career-highs for 8 points and 5 rebounds, while sophomore Davis Beischer achieved his career high of 5 points. Senior Shane Smith and junior Jasiah Davis both scored their first baskets of the season.

Girls hoops braces for defending state champs

The 4-2 Cavalier girls basketball team will host Charlotte Latin and defending state champs Providence Day this weekend in Kirby Gym. The 1-1 Hawks knocked the Cavs out of the state tournament last year and will provide a tough test again for Coach Krista Gingrich-White’s squad. Providence Day has won the last eight state championships and enters Saturday’s 1 p.m. game with a record of 4-2. Following back-to-back losses to Jordan and Rabun Gap, the DA girls have taken their last two games — a 46-17 win at Voyager Academy and Tuesday night’s 51-26 home win over the Durham Flight. In the victory over Voyager, senior Izzy Strigel scored a game-high 15 points, while junior Imani Spence had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Both Strigel and Spence were at it again in the win over the Flight this Tuesday. Strigel led all scorers with 18 points, while Spence stuffed the stat sheet with 9 points, 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists. Senior Nicole Riepl hit two 3-pointers en route to 10 points, while senior Erin Dilweg added 5 points and 11 boards. Sophomore Claire Middleton chipped in 5 points and 12 boards in the win.

Meet new swim team coach Sarah Chaires

The boys and girls swim teams will have their first meet this afternoon at North Raleigh Christian. The Cavaliers will be under the direction of first-year coach Sarah Chaires. While there are 47 boys and girls on the team, only three are seniors. Coach Chaires, who is also serving the DA athletics department as a part-time medical consultant, has an extensive background in competitive swim coaching; she is a Level 2 USA Swimming Age Group Coach and founder/coach of the Club Kick Start Swim Program in Chapel Hill. Chaires was a competitive swimmer growing up in Canada and went on to swim and row at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Coach Chaires, along with assistants Theresa Shebalin, Luke Lechner and Signe Waldbauer, will rely on the senior leadership of Ellie Palmer, Ted Middleton and Benson Easley to help mold the young team throughout the season. We will have a detailed report from today’s first meet in next week’s Cavs Corner.

Athletic Hall of Fame induction

We hope to see everyone in Kirby Gym on Friday night for the basketball double-header between the Cavs and Charlotte Latin. At halftime of the boys game, we will honor and induct the third class of our Athletic Hall of Fame. This year’s class includes Christine Suggs ’05, Marshall Moore ’92, Conrad Hall ’89, Sherry Bartholomew Holtzclaw ’78, Phil Pearce ’77, Hunter Henry ’97, Kelsey Kearney ’08 and coach Greg Murray. Learn more about the inductees here. If you can’t make it out to Kirby, you can catch the live-stream of both games and the ceremony at
