Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. If that popular adage holds true, then Steve Engebretsen's 38 years at Durham Academy — a span marked by countless long hours and days, and shepherding the athletic careers of thousands of DA students and hundreds of coaches — truly represents a decades-long labor of love. Dedicating your life's work to athletics at an independent school also means handling your fair share of a little blood, a lot of sweat and (sometimes) tears. And while he'd never admit being DA's athletic director wasn't hard work, Steve will tell you that his job was easier as long as he kept one thing in mind.

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving break and is ready for a big stretch of the winter sports season that will take place between now and winter break. Both varsity basketball teams are off to Charlotte this weekend for key games vs. Charlotte Latin and Providence Day, and our swim teams will open up their 2018–2019 campaigns this afternoon at North Raleigh Christian.

Winter season is upon us, and if the varsity basketball teams' home-openers were any indication, it is going to be an exciting and fun three months in Kirby Gym.

A crowd of supportive family members and friends packed the lobby of Kirby Gym as seniors Anna West and Shaffer Woody officially declared their intent to play lacrosse in college on Wednesday. Around the same time, fellow Cavalier Tyler Carpenter '18 also signed to play Division I college lacrosse in a signing ceremony at Salisbury School in Connecticut, where he is completing a post-graduate year.

Three DA varsity teams will compete for state championships this weekend as the fall season comes to an end. This week also saw our golf team finish fourth in the conference tournament, while the cross-country teams will run this afternoon in the conference meet.

It was evident over the last week that our teams were ready to get back to action following some time off due to Hurricane Florence. In fact, this was one of the most successful weeks in recent memory, as our seven varsity teams combined to go 14–1 vs. their opponents.

There is nothing to report in the Durham Academy sports world, as there were no athletics contests in the past week due to Hurricane Florence. Major flooding hit our athletics fields Monday morning, but we seem to have survived with minimal damage and time for our fields to dry. With no events scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday anyway due to the observance of Yom Kippur, our teams should be in good shape to get back to work this afternoon.

We wish everyone a safe weekend and hope that our teams can continue their seasons next week. All athletics events have been canceled for the remainder of the week in anticipation of Hurricane Florence.

This week in Durham Academy athletics has been one of both terrific team and individual accomplishments — highlighted by both tennis and boys lacrosse both claiming outright conference titles. The baseball team, led by a great individual performance from senior Ian Layzer, swept North Raleigh Christian last week to claim a piece of the first conference title in 10 years.
