Basketball - Varsity Boys
vs. Riverside High School
|Date:||December 5, 2017|
For the third straight year, the DA boys took a two point victory over Riverside High; tonight it was a 56-54 comeback win for the Cavs who kept their second half magic alive after trailing by 14 at halftime. Despite a rough first half for the Cavs that saw the Pirates turn an early eight point deficit into a double-digit lead, DA used a stifling full court trap and four late threes from senior Jack McCallie to rally. In fact, McCallie scored all 14 of DA's fourth period points as he finished with a career-high 22 on the night. Junior Michael Savarino kept DA in it early as he hit nine of his 12 points in the first period. Junior Bryant Randleman finished with 11 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Riverside closed out the first half with a 16-1 run after a Randleman jumper gave the Cavs a 21-20 lead. The 14 point deficit at the half was also the Cavs largest deficit of the season. DA immediately responded by scoring the first ten points of the third quarter on threes by Savarino and McCallie followed by two free throws by senior Charlie Mendys (six points, five rebounds, three assists) and a layin by McCallie. The Cavs and Pirates would exchange baskets late in the period and Riverside would take a 45-42 lead headed to the fourth. DA cut it to two on the first of four McCallie fourth period threes, but the Pirates would open up a 54-45 with 4:07 to go. The Cavs still trailed by nine with under three minutes to go and just when it looked like the five game win streak and the six-game win streak vs. DPS schools would be coming to an end, McCallie said "not so fast." Jack hit threes on three straight possessions all off of Pirates turnovers and then would cap off the night with the game-winning layup from Mendys with 51 seconds left. After Riverside's sixth straight turnover, Randleman missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Pirates would hold for the last shot. A missed three from the corner and a missed putback by the Pirates led to another Riverside offensive rebound and timeout. In fact, the Cavs were outrebounded 38-23, their worst margin in over two seasons. With 2.6 seconds left, the Pirates had a good look from three in the right corner, but the shot just missed and DA had finished the game on an 11-0 run (all by McCallie) in the final 2:52 to take another comeback win and improve their record to 8-1.
