Basketball - Varsity Boys
vs. Charlotte Latin School
Hall of Fame Night
|Date:||December 1, 2017|
Despite shooting a season low 3-20 from three point range, including going 0-9 in the second half, the DA boys gutted out a 62-56 win over Charlotte Latin Friday night in the CavDome. Junior guard Bryant Randleman led the Cavs with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals while seniors Charlie Mendys and Tyler Carpenter each chipped in 13 points. Carpenter and Mendys combined for 12 of the Cavs 21 fourth-quarter points that saw them rally from five down to start the period. Freshman Cole Sinclair, who had a huge and-1 late in the game, added eight in the win. Carpenter was key down the stretch for the Cavs as he had seven of his 13 points in the fourth period and finished the game with six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. After shooting just 34% from the field through three periods, the Cavs shot 7-12 in the final frame while holding the Hawks to just 3-14.
Latin took it to the Cavs early in the game scoring inside and using their strength to outrebound DA. The Hawks had their largest lead of the game at 19-12 early in the second before DA went on a 9-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. Latin would eventually score the final five points of the half including a buzzer-beater from three quarters court by RJ Johnson to take a 34-28 lead at the break. The Hawks would reopen a seven point lead in the third but DA would hang around as Randleman scored 10 of DA's 13 points in the third. Trailing 48-44 early in the fourth, the Cavs would use a 7-0 run to gain their first lead of the second half. Carpenter would score the first five of these points and DA would take the lead for good on a Randleman steal and feed to Mendys for a layin. Latin would hit two threes sandwiched around two free throws in the final 3:10 of the game, but the Cavs had big baskets from Sinclair and senior Jack McCallie to hold on for the win, the third in a row against Latin after going almost 30 years without defeating the Hawks.
