Tennis - Varsity Girls vs. Greensboro Day School
NCISAA semi-finals at high seed. $10.00 admission.

Event Type: Tournament

Date: October 24, 2017

Event Recap:

The DA girls tennis team followed the script it has been using all year as a dominating doubles performance and solid singles play lifted them to a 5-0 win over Greensboro Day School and a berth in Saturday's state championship match.  This will be the Cavs first ever appearance in the state finals and a chance to win DA's first state championship in any sport in five years.

DA jumped on the Bengals early in doubles.  Alexis Galloway and Madeline Towning, playing the same Bengal duo who beat them 8-6 last month struck early and often for a 7-0 lead.  After GDS started to make a run (winning two straight games then having multiple game points for a third), the sophomore DA pair closed it out 8-2.  On court 2, Joy Callwood and Renee George started a little cautiously leading just 2-1 after three games.  The undefeated pair then turned it on to win the final 6 games and take an 8-1 victory.  The third doubles team of captains Nicole Riepl and Julia King improved to 19-1 on the season as they took an 8-0 victory.

Leading 3-0 after doubles (DA's 14th doubles sweep in 17 matches), the Cavs needed just two singles wins to close out the match.  Sophomore Taylor Hunter, the lone Cav who dropped their first set, ended up being the first one off as she rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 victory.  Now leading 4-0, three Cavs were closing in on the deciding point.  It ended up being George on court 4, a 6-0, 6-2 winner sending DA to their school record 19th win!  When the match was halted, Callwood had match points on court 1 leading 6-2, 5-1; Towning led 6-1, 5-2; Galloway led 6-4, 2-1 and Riepl led 6-2, 5-4.  DA will battle rival Cary Academy Saturday afternoon at Salem Academy for the state championship
