When Kristin Stroupe picks up her iPhone, two faces smile back at her: Stroupe's own beaming face and the equally beaming face of her high school coach and mentor, Leigh Cooper Wallace. She helped change the course of Stroupe's life and inspired her to impact the lives of others.

A shift in Durham Academy Upper School's approach to class trips is opening up a world of possibilities: student dancers perfecting pliés with the best in the business in New York City; a pig-to-plate exploration of North Carolina's barbecue industry; a more intimate, intense Civil Rights Tour, with abundant opportunities for reflection among a small group of participants.

The winter weather forced our varsity athletes into an impromptu second winter break last week, meaning a lot of canceled and postponed events. Unfortunately, the swim team's home meet against Greensboro Day on Wednesday was canceled, and the basketball teams' Friday games vs. Wake Christian were postponed to Thursday, Feb. 1.

Culminating 13 months of research with the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program (NITARP), Upper School science teacher Howard Lineberger helped present the results of his team's work at the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society in January in Washington, D.C. NITARP partners small groups of largely high school educators with mentor professional astronomers for original research projects.

Kristen Klein will serve as Durham Academy's next assistant head of school, Head of School Michael Ulku-Steiner announced on Monday. Klein, who now serves as Upper School director at Pittsburgh's Winchester Thurston School, will begin her tenure at DA July 1, 2018.

Durham Academy is turning off the legacy (blue) Veracross portal in favor of the newly designed parent portals. No longer will you have to click the "Full Site" link on your phone; the new, responsive Veracross Parent Portal is fully functional, whether you are using a desktop computer or smartphone.

Frigid temps and slippery roads were no match for Durham Academy teachers' and students' passion for learning on Wednesday and Thursday, when classes were canceled due to inclement weather.

While the winter weather has forced our swimmers and hoopsters out of the pool and off the court on Wednesday and Thursday, our four teams were able to get back into competition during the previous week.

While our varsity basketball teams got a surprisingly late start to their 2018 openers thanks to the winter weather last week, both the boys and girls teams were in action on Tuesday against conference rivals Ravenscroft. The Ravens came away victorious in both games, but there is no time for our teams to dwell on defeat as the Cavs will have three games in the next six days, including tonight's home action vs. neighbor Trinity School.

A love of the outdoors and a commitment to serving others are trademarks of Seth Jernigan '96, who helps lead a family-owned business that's about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. He attended Durham Academy from Preschool through Upper School, and served as president of the DA Alumni Board from 2014 to 2016.

Seventeen members of the Durham Academy Upper School Science Olympiad team traveled to Fairfax, Virginia, to compete in the Fairfax High School Invitational Jan. 5 to 6. The team placed 26th in a highly competitive field of 57 teams hailing from around the country.

Cindy Moore never doubted that she wanted to work with kids. "I was always a babysitter. I was always the person that the adults in my life left in charge of kids. I always have loved kids, even when I was a kid. I knew that I wanted to do something related to kids. I think I actually knew that it was either a psychologist or a pediatrician, and I was afraid of medical school."

As the end of the year approaches, many families honor a teacher or special person for the holidays or new year. One option for doing so and supporting world hunger relief efforts is to make a donation in their honor to Rise Against Hunger, which works to feed men, women and especially children in famine-stricken areas of the world.

Seven alumni athletes and one coach were inducted into Durham Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Dec. 1. This marks the third class of inductees for the Athletic Hall of Fame, which was established in 2013 and will tap new members every other year.

Re-enrollment for next year begins soon! On Monday, Jan. 22, re-enrollment and tuition information for 2018-2019 will be emailed to parents of current Durham Academy students. Using their Veracross link, families can re-enroll, submit tuition deposits via bank draft and update any medical information.

A stint with Teach For America was the beginning of a love affair with learning for Jamie Gutter. He is committed to the belief that all kids deserve the right to an excellent education and heads a charter school that is part of a network of free, public college-preparatory middle schools in Nashville.
An independent, coeducational day school, pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
