Preschoolers share Valentine's Day love with Emerald Pond

Pink and red hearts with white polka dots, smiling faces framed by hearts and trees that sprout valentines are a few of the ways Durham Academy Preschoolers will be wishing “Happy Valentine’s Day” to the residents of Emerald Pond retirement community. Each kindergarten and pre-k student was paired with a resident and then created a personal valentine for “Martin,” “Esther,” “Myron,” “Selma,” “Harold and Doris” and more than 100 other seniors who live at Emerald Pond.

The Valentine’s Day wishes are part of the Preschool’s continuing relationship with the retirement community located just across Pickett Road from the Upper School. The entire Preschool visited Emerald Pond in September, and since then Preschoolers have trick-or-treated there, decorated the community’s Christmas tree and delivered dining room centerpieces made by DA’s youngest students.

Emerald Pond residents have visited the Preschool to read the children at lunchtime, to see a dress rehearsal of the Preschool Songfest and to perform with the Emerald Pond bell choir at a Preschool assembly.

“I love every minute of it,” said Emerald Pond resident Anne Breth. “I love to see the children!”
