Only the best chess players around the globe qualify to compete in the World Youth Chess Championships each year, and among them this year was Durham Academy eighth-grader Arya Kumar. Despite being relatively new to the game, Kumar placed 28th in a field of 107 female players under the age of 14 at the tournament held in late October in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece.

Winter season is upon us, and if the varsity basketball teams' home-openers were any indication, it is going to be an exciting and fun three months in Kirby Gym.

A crowd of supportive family members and friends packed the lobby of Kirby Gym as seniors Anna West and Shaffer Woody officially declared their intent to play lacrosse in college on Wednesday. Around the same time, fellow Cavalier Tyler Carpenter '18 also signed to play Division I college lacrosse in a signing ceremony at Salisbury School in Connecticut, where he is completing a post-graduate year.

The Used Book Sale collection efforts are off to a terrific start, with thousands of books donated already. Many of these books are particularly appropriate for Preschool readers, so the Used Book Sale committee will once again host a Preschool Mini Used Book Sale on Friday, Nov. 30.

Durham Academy's Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run has drawn an enthusiastic crowd of runners, walkers and cheering family members since its inception in 2010, and the ninth annual Turkey Trot promises to be better than ever. The 5K race is now an official US Track and Field 5K, and the Parents Association event — held on a Saturday morning in previous years — has moved to 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Upper School and will include food trucks and lots of activities for children.

In the nine years since Kyle Mumma '09 graduated from Durham Academy, his career has run the gamut — from operations with Duke basketball and football, to the nonprofit and business consulting worlds. Through those experiences, he's become something of an early-career expert, and he's parlaying that knowledge into his newest endeavor: launching a start-up company that aims to help college athletes translate their experience on the field into the workplace. And on Wednesday, Mumma offered some of that advice to DA seniors at the inaugural Career Day.

The incredible fall season has come to a close, and we are now transitioning to winter sports. Our four high school basketball teams and our swim team have been practicing for a week and a half and are ready to start competing.

The Upper School Bundle Up Durham Club — which works to provide winter coats to children in need in the Durham Public Schools system — is collecting coats of all sizes. The drive is under way now and will culminate with the home varsity basketball games on Dec. 14.

Durham Academy Upper School teachers and advisors selected 13 students as nominees for the 2019 session of Governor's School of North Carolina. The five-and-one-half-week program is the nation's oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students.

It was a great weekend to be a Cavalier! All three of our varsity teams that competed on Friday and Saturday turned in amazing performances, resulting in girls tennis and girls cross-country state titles and a runner-up finish for boys cross-country.

Jeff Peirce took his young daughters to his environmental engineering lab at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering long before there was a "Take Your Daughter to Work Day." He would take Leyf Peirce Starling and her sister into his lab on the weekend to help him.

All seven of Durham Academy's fall athletics teams have had a phenomenal season, which wrapped up this week with DA state championships in girls tennis and girls cross-country, and an oh-so-close runner-up finish by the boys cross-country team.

To all 559 alumni who made a gift to the 2017–2018 Durham Academy Fund, thank you! This was a year of both record participation by alumni and record dollars raised by the alumni community — a whopping $232,500.

Creativity and communication skills come into play when Ben Swain '94 challenges "we've always done it this way" thoughts — whether it's helping to build a tool that saves a patient money on MRI scans in his job at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina or making fans laugh about sports rather than shouting about who's a better basketball coach via his blog, FM radio show or Twitter feed.

As a structural engineer, Susan Easterling '00 experiences the satisfaction of contributing to a vision becoming reality, and she's proud to have been a part of buildings all around the Bull City — including Durham Academy's own STEM and Humanities Center. As president of one of the few women-owned engineering businesses in the Triangle, she strives to balance work with being mom to her two young children — and to live each day to its fullest.

Three DA varsity teams will compete for state championships this weekend as the fall season comes to an end. The top-seeded girls tennis team will battle Charlotte Latin at Salem College Saturday afternoon, defending last year's state championship title, and both the boys and girls cross-country teams will compete in Hendersonville on Friday in the state meet.

The school year has barely begun, but ninth- through 11th-graders are already thinking about what they will be doing the last week of the school year. No, it's not exams — final exams will have been completed by then. Rather, Upper Schoolers are studying the 40-page Cavalier Capstone Catalog and deciding which of the 30 experiences interests them.

Twenty-four Durham Academy students and alumni were recognized for their community service efforts at the Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center's Tomorrow's Community Leaders ceremony on Tuesday. The program recognized students who earned the Commissioner's Award, Mayor's Award and President's Volunteer Service Award. Several DA students were recognized with more than one award.

The financial aid application deadline for current DA families is Dec. 3. If you are interested in applying for financial aid for the 2019–2020 school year, please contact the Office of Enrollment Management to receive information. (All those currently receiving aid will automatically be sent this information.) Financial aid is given on the basis of demonstrated family financial need. This year, about 11 percent of our student body received assistance toward tuition and fees.

In The Pocket is excited to present their annual benefit concert for Rise Against Hunger — their first big concert of the year, Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 PM in Kenan Auditorium! This year's iteration of ITP is the fullest instrumentation and sound they've had in years, with the typical soul band horn line as well as a string and woodwind section. The group is eager to share songs with the DA community that take advantage of the full ensemble.

Durham Academy Upper School is thrilled to present its upcoming fall production, The Diary of Anne Frank, from Oct. 25 to 27. The play, written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and adapted in 1997 by Wendy Kesselman, is a powerful adaptation based on the diary written by Anne Frank when she and seven others were hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of Amsterdam in World War II.

Our varsity teams' regular seasons are complete and post-season play has begun. While the boys soccer team had its season come to a close on Tuesday in the first round of the state tournament, the girls tennis, volleyball and field hockey teams will all be competing Friday in the state quarterfinals. This week also saw our golf team finish fourth in the conference tournament, while the cross-country teams will run this afternoon in the conference meet.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized nine Durham Academy seniors as commended students in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Students receiving letters of commendation were chosen by virtue of their performance on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Increased time for literacy and math instruction and more time to serve the social-emotional needs of students are two of the driving factors behind Durham Academy's decision to lengthen the kindergarten formal school day beginning in August 2019. While the kindergarten day will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the pre-kindergarten schedule will remain the same, running from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What has been a fantastic fall sports season is heading down the home stretch, with post-season play beginning next week. It goes without saying that with all seven of our teams having strong seasons, the next two weeks will bring excitement to campus as conference and state titles are being chased.
