With New Sunday Afternoon Start, Turkey Trot Puts a New Foot Forward

Durham Academy’s Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run has drawn an enthusiastic crowd of runners, walkers and cheering family members since its inception in 2010, and the ninth annual Turkey Trot promises to be better than ever. The 5K race is now an official US Track and Field 5K, and the Parents Association event — held on a Saturday morning in previous years — has moved to 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Upper School and will include food trucks and lots of activities for children.

The Turkey Trot 5K has provided chip timing for several years, and now that the 5K course has been officially measured, certified for accuracy and sanctioned by US Track and Field, runners will be able to accurately compare their time in the Turkey Trot to their performance in other certified races.

“We are trying a Sunday race this year, and hope a nice warm, fall afternoon will bring more of the community out,” Turkey Trot co-chair Ashley Perry said. The 2 p.m. Sunday start time for the 5K is expected to draw more Upper School runners than the 9 a.m. Saturday start, she said. Food trucks Chirba Chirba Dumpling and Belgian Waffle Crafters will be on hand Sunday afternoon, and may be joined by Locopops.

The 5K race and the fun run for kids 10 and under are still the focal points of the Turkey Trot, but Perry and co-chairs Priti Elkins-Williams, Lauren Powell and Ashley Yetman hope adding more activities will encourage families to linger and get to know each other. Lower School PE teacher Costen Irons is organizing field games, and additional crafts stations will be available.

Empower Fitness, ActivEdge and Burn Bootcamp will offer warm-up and cool-down sessions for racers. The 5K race welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and abilities — Perry said a kindergartner ran in the 2017 Turkey Trot 5K — and the Fun Run will be divided into age-group heats that try to catch the “turkey” before it reaches the finish line on the DA track.

Online registration for the Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run will continue until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, and same-day registration will be available by credit card from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Prizes will be awarded for the top runner in each division, including gift certificates to Great Outdoor Provisions, Fleet Feet, Burn Bootcamp, Tutti Frutti and others.

Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run sponsors are Puddle Baby, The Bartlett Condominiums, ActivEdge, Empower Fitness, RED Collective, i9 Sports and Blue Water Pediatric Dentistry.
