Speech and Debate Team Wraps up Busy, Successful October

The Durham Academy speech and debate team has emerged from a busy October — marked by five tournaments over four weekends — with much success to celebrate.

Florida Blue Key (Gainesville, Florida)

Thirteen Cavaliers competed in the 2018 Florida Blue Key Speech & Debate Tournament – one of the largest tournaments in the Southeast. In Team Sweepstakes, DA was 13th overall out of 102 schools that competed in the tournament.

  • Kiran Sundar: Octafinalist (top 48) — Original Oratory

  • Carlton zum Brunnen: Octafinalist (top 48) — Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Carlton zum Brunnen: Quarterfinalist (top 24) — Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Emily Kohn: Semifinalist (top 12) — Humorous Interpretation

  • Emily Donaldson: Best Presiding Officer — Preliminary Chamber of Congressional Debate

  • Emily Donaldson: Eighth Place (out of 246 competitors) — Congressional Debate

  • Matthew Chang and Daniel Park: Double-Octafinalists (top 32) — Public Forum Debate

  • Andrew Owens and Adriana Kim: Octafinalists (top 16) — Public Forum Debate

  • Nathan Dalva-Baird and Sheridan Kum: Runner-Up (out of 140 teams) — Public Forum Debate

  • Sheridan Kum: Top Speaker (out of 280 competitors) — Public Forum Debate

Viking Classic (North Mecklenburg High School, Huntersville)

Eleven Cavaliers compete in the 16th Viking Classic.

  • Lizzie Kerman: Fifth Place — Varsity Congressional Debate

  • Aadesh Anchaliya and Aamer Husain: Fifth Place — Novice Public Forum Debate

Dogwood Speech & Debate Tournament #1 (Jack Britt High School, Fayetteville)

Twenty-seven Cavaliers competed in the first Dogwood Speech & Debate tournament of the year.

  • Carlton zum Brunnen: Second Place — Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Sierra Brown: Best Novice — Humorous Interpretation

  • Chris Burkhard: Fifth Place — Lincoln-Douglas Debate

  • Emily Norry and Anna Brent-Levenstein: Third Place — Novice Public Forum Debate

  • Sophia Benjamin: Fifth Place — Novice Congressional Debate

  • Emily Donaldson: Champion — Congressional Debate

Dogwood Speech & Debate Tournament #2 (Enloe High School, Raleigh)

Thirty-four Cavaliers competed in the second leg of the Dogwood Speech & Debate Tournament qualifying series. DA finished as Runner-Up in Overall Sweepstakes.

Presentation Voices Invitational (San Jose, California)

Three Cavaliers competed in the Presentation Voices Invitational. Hosted by Presentation High School, the tournament serves as a fundraiser for the Voices Foundation, a 501c3 organization that provides access to debate for underserved populations in the Bay Area.
