Upper School Character & Community

Durham Academy's success in fulfilling our mission — to equip students for "moral, happy and productive lives" — becomes quite clear in the Upper School, where we see students independently initiating projects with kindness, engagement and generosity at their core. See a few examples of such efforts in the stories below.

In addition to reinforcing our students' moral obligation to their broader community in the Upper School, we also work to foster connections within our school community. As a ninth-grader, each student is matched with an advisory group comprising an Upper School teacher and about 10 classmates. Students remain with their advisory groups throughout their four years in the Upper School, creating an environment in which advisors get to truly know their students and mentor them them during their academic, social and emotional journeys.
