Eighth-grade celebration puts focus

on the excellence within each student

Middle School celebration

The Middle School years are a time of students figuring out who they are. Taking risks. Trying out new things — sometimes finding new passions, and other times trying, failing and trying again. So to honor the journey that each individual student has taken on Durham Academy's Academy Road campus, on Thursday the faculty recognized eighth-graders' excellence not through an awards ceremony honoring a sliver of the class, but through what was essentially a big goodbye party for all 100 eighth-graders.

Nine seniors join Cum Laude,

DA's highest academic distinction

Cum Laude

Nine Durham Academy seniors were granted membership in the school's Cum Laude Society — the highest academic honor that the school can bestow — on Monday. The distinction is made in recognition of students' grades, strength of academic schedule and contributions to campus intellectual life. Read More

Mary Norkus

Dancing on the stage of Kenan Auditorium was Mary Norkus’ introduction to Durham Academy. It was in the early 1980s and DA provided performance space for Carolina Dancers, a community group of young adults who had a dance background.  

“I remember thinking what a great school, the theater and the whole concept of a school letting an outside community group come in and perform.” More than 30 years later and after 20 years as DA's Middle School movement teacher, Norkus still feels that way about the school.

Cavs wrap up strong year, placing

6th in Wells Fargo Cup standings

Durham Academy's varsity athletic teams went deep into N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association spring tournaments and meets, with girls lacrosse placing second in the state; girls soccer finishing as a semifinalist; boys tennis finishing as a semifinalist, with a school-record 20 victories along the way; boys lacrosse finishing as a quarterfinalist; the boys golf team placing seventh; and the girls and boys track teams finishing 14th and ninth, respectively. The spring season capped a fantastic year for DA athletics, which finished sixth of 24 NCISAA 3A schools in the Wells Fargo Cup standings for the 2015-2016 school year. Read More
