| Middle School celebrates beloved teacher Marian Saffo-Cogswell, dedicates fountain When a woman described by students as "a second mom" and by fellow teachers as "a gift to colleagues" plans to retire after 33 years of teaching at Durham Academy, what do you do? You get the entire Middle School community together for a surprise celebration. You invite a couple dozen of her former colleagues and students, family members and friends to join in. You create a video montage of students and teachers singing her praises. You set the stage for a ballroom dance number in her honor. And you let this woman — the one-of-a-kind Marian Saffo-Cogswell — know that she'll be thought of often after she leaves campus, thanks to a beautiful new fountain dedicated in her honor. | Chess program ends school year with string of successes In two straight weekends of tournaments — the National Elementary Chess Championships and the North Carolina State All Girls Championships — Durham Academy's chess prorgram has again shown its mettle. Read More Faculty Spotlight: Second-grade teacher Karen Lovelace Karen Lovelace vows she was never good at math. In fact, she credits college-age tutors from Wake Forest with helping her through geometry and algebra when she was a student at Winston-Salem’s Reynolds High School, but three numbers instantly come to mind about her career. This school year marks her 10th year in second grade, her 24th year at Durham Academy and her 37th year of teaching. Read More
