| Eighth-grader Carlton zum Brunnen places second in state Geo Bee Each January, fifth-grade history teacher Virginia Hall prefaces the start of the Durham Academy Middle School National Geographic Bee with an admonition for the audience: "No matter how they do today, they have already come far." It's true that to make it to the stage of DA's Taylor Hall, students must first best their peers in classroom-level bees. And then the winner of DA's schoolwide bee, along with the winners of the hundreds of other school bees around the state, vie for one of just 100 spots in the statewide bee. And then those 100 geography whizzes compete for a spot in the state bee's finalist round. And then those 10 finalists battle to be among the last students on stage. So when DA eighth-grader Carlton zum Brunnen was left standing at the conclusion of the North Carolina National Geographic Bee with a second-place trophy in his hand and ribbon around his neck, you could say that he's come really, really far. | Student-led Ultimate tournament to benefit Durham Nativity School No matter the goal count at this weekend's Ultimate Frisbee tournament at Durham Academy, the true victor is already apparent: students at Durham Nativity School, which stands to establish a 1:1 laptop program with proceeds from the high-flying fundraiser. The tournament — set for Saturday and Sunday on DA's Upper School campus — is the brainchild of DA freshman Alex Hoffman. After being introduced to Durham Nativity as an eighth-grader when students from the all-boys middle school joined DA students for their end-of-year dance, Hoffman went home and did some research.
