Dr. Marshall Moore '92 passes on lessons

from Navy career to Middle Schoolers

In the 24 years since he graduated from Durham Academy, Dr. Marshall Moore's skilled hands have experienced a lot. They've amputated hundreds of limbs of wounded soldiers — sometimes saving their lives, sometimes not. They've fought to untangle a knotted scuba air supply line as Moore sought to preserve his own life underwater. They've manually pumped a man's heart, sustaining his life with a backdrop of the unforgiving Afghan landscape.

Through his work as an orthopedic surgeon with the U.S. Navy, Moore has been subjected to physical and mental challenges that most people can only dream of. But the lessons he learned from those experiences — the importance of preparation, grit in times of adversity, and being open to new adventures and people — are accessible to people of all walks of life, and the Class of 1992 alumnus recently shared some of them with DA Middle Schoolers. Just a week after first- and second-graders performed a musical rendition of The Great Fuzz Frenzy, the students were thrilled to meet the authors of the popular children’s book. Sisters Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel visited the Lower School on Tuesday to talk to students about the writing and illustrating process. Read More


Faculty Spotlight: Upper School

Spanish teacher Liliana Simón

Liliana Simon

Liliana Simón wants to cultivate curious students, and she hopes her Upper School Spanish classes will help them have the confidence to satisfy their curiosity.

It’s a journey Simón has taken herself. From growing up in Lima, Peru, with no running water or electricity, to an arduous path to learning English, to moving to the United States where she knew no one, to earning a graduate degree, to teaching her native language, to becoming a U.S. citizen, “I have been very lucky.” She thought she would teach English in Lima, but she likes teaching Spanish at Durham Academy because “it’s more fun to teach what’s mine.” Read More
