With successful start, Middle School

affinity group program looks to grow

One by one, the student called his African-American peers over to take a group photo in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington. When he called over Dr. Cindy Moore — a Durham Academy learning specialist who was helping to chaperone the annual seventh-grade trip to the nation's capital — she couldn't help but notice the demographics of the group. And then she was struck by a comment from one of the students: "We're 8.3 percent of this class."

It was clear to Moore, who is also African-American, that the students were in need of an opportunity to be together — whether to just goof off and eat pizza, or to discuss weighty topics that only one another could understand as part of a growing minority on campus.

Back from year in Oman, junior 

Ginya Marr shares experiences

Ginya Marr

For Durham Academy junior Ginya Marr, the desire to truly experience another country and culture — to befriend its people, to witness its natural beauty, to learn its language, to understand its religion and geopolitics — wasn't something she could ignore. So last school year, when she was just 15, she hopped on a plane to Oman, moved in with a host family and soaked in the culture of the peaceful Middle Eastern country for 10 months. She's now on a quest to encourage other DA students to explore such opportunities for immersive travel and has spoken to eighth- and ninth-graders about her experience. Read More

Greg Murray

Greg Murray loves being part of a team. In 37 years at Durham Academy, he has taught students from Preschool through Upper School, coached five athletic teams, chaired the physical education department, directed the Senior Challenge program, advised the yearbook, led summer camps and served as DA's unofficial photographer.
