'My Hero' books weave art, writing & love

What makes a hero heroic? It's not always dramatic acts of bravery. Sometimes, everyday moments of heroism — exhibitions of perseverance, work ethic and courage — speak just as loudly. Close to 100 Durham Academy sixth-graders honored their heroes, from family members to teachers and friends, on Wednesday at an opening reception for their My Hero pop-up books. The literary works of art are on exhibit at downtown Chapel Hill's FRANK Gallery through April 5.

DA soccer prodigies cross

the pond to train with the pros

Ninth-grader Alex Charles and eighth-grader Scotty Taylor followed up their DA spring break with a one-of-a-kind trip overseas to tour and train in some of soccer's most storied stadiums, play friendly matches against English Premier League and Scottish Premiership youth academies, get coached by former pro footballers and watch professional matches from Manchester to Glasgow. The duo even got to meet Stoke City's American teammate Geoff Cameron, the U.S. men's national team member who joined Stoke City's Potters as a defender in 2012. Read More

 

Cum Laude Society honors

21 students with membership

Eleven Durham Academy juniors and 10 seniors were granted membership in the school's Cum Laude Society on Sunday. The honor — the highest that DA bestows —recognizes excellence on the basis of several criteria: grade-point average, strength of academic schedule, character, leadership and contributions to school life. The students inducted on Sunday comprise 10 percent of the junior class and 10 percent of the senior class. Read More

 

Nine DA juniors are selected

for 2015 Governor's School

Nine Durham Academy juniors have been selected to attend Governor's School of North Carolina's 2015 program. The five-and-one-half-week program is the nation's oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students. Read More

Lower School's Jump Rope for

Heart efforts net $78K

Lower School students have jumped, hopped and skipped their way to the school's largest-ever Jump Rope for Heart fundraising total: $78,674.92. 

"This year, our second- through fourth-grade students made their jumping and fundraising personal by dedicating their efforts to a friend or relative," said physical education teacher Judy Chandler, who helps head up the American Heart Association fundraiser at DA. Read More

 

Spring blood drive set for April 2

Due to this winter's inclement weather, the area Red Cross chapter's blood supply is more than 5,000 units short — and Durham Academy Upper School's Red Cross Club is doing its part to reduce the shortage with a blood drive Thursday, April 2. Read More

language, culture lessons to life

From flamenco dancing in Sevilla to preparing traditional Spanish cuisine in Toledo, eight Durham Academy Middle Schoolers spent their spring break experiencing Spanish culture first-hand during a four-city tour of Spain. Read More
