| France trip gives eighth-graders a taste of culture and history For almost three decades, French teacher Teresa Engebretsen has spent nearly every spring break in France, introducing Durham Academy students to the wonders of French cuisine, some of the world's finest art museums and the country's rich history. While the trip started as a journey for Upper Schoolers in 1987, Engebretsen now travels with a group comprising mostly Middle Schoolers, and this year's group — 20 eighth-graders, two 10th-graders and fellow teachers Judy Chandler and Andy Pogach — returned to Durham on March 16 after a 12-day journey. Read More In The Pocket's Nicaragua benefit is set for March 27 at Motorco In The Pocket's annual Nicaragua benefit concert promises to again delight your ears and make your heart sing, as current members and alumni perform to raise funds for Durham Academy's sister school in Nicaragua. The benefit concert, rescheduled from an earlier date, is set for Friday, March 27, at 9 p.m. at Motorco Music Hall. Read More 'I'm Not Racist ... Am I?' screening rescheduled for April 15 "I'm Not Racist ... Am I?" is a documentary that follows 12 diverse New York City teens tackling those issues through workshops and often tense and painful conversations with their friends and family over the course of an entire year. Durham Academy will host a screening of the film on Wednesday, April 15, at 6:30 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session with one of the filmmakers. Read More Upper School Spring Film Fest focuses on gender issues From a documentary focused on color discrimination within the African American community to a film examining the ideals of manhood in American culture, Upper Schoolers dove into gender issues this week during the school's first-ever Spring Film Fest. The four-day event, held during extended tutorial periods, was hosted by four equality-minded clubs: SHE, He for She, the Diversity Club and the Gender and Sexuality Alliance. Lowell Oakley '14 advances to 'The Voice' Knockouts Durham Academy alumnus Lowell Oakley '14 punched his ticket to the Knockout Round of the NBC singing competition show The Voice on Monday. His Battle Round performance of Hound Dog with fellow Voice competitor Kimberly Nichole wowed coach Pharrell Williams, who agonized over the decision for a full 45 minutes. In the end, Pharrell chose DA's own Cav Crooner Oakley to remain on "Team Other." View a video of the performance here.
