France trip gives eighth-graders

a taste of culture and history

For almost three decades, French teacher Teresa Engebretsen has spent nearly every spring break in France, introducing Durham Academy students to the wonders of French cuisine, some of the world's finest art museums and the country's rich history.

While the trip started as a journey for Upper Schoolers in 1987, Engebretsen now travels with a group comprising mostly Middle Schoolers, and this year's group — 20 eighth-graders, two 10th-graders and fellow teachers Judy Chandler and Andy Pogach — returned to Durham on March 16 after a 12-day journey. Read More

Lowell Oakley '14 advances

to 'The Voice' Knockouts

Durham Academy alumnus Lowell Oakley '14 punched his ticket to the Knockout Round of the NBC singing competition show The Voice on Monday. His Battle Round performance of Hound Dog with fellow Voice competitor Kimberly Nichole wowed coach Pharrell Williams, who agonized over the decision for a full 45 minutes. In the end, Pharrell chose DA's own Cav Crooner Oakley to remain on "Team Other." View a video of the performance here.
