| Skype session brings NASA scientist into Lower School students' orbit If Durham Academy students want to visit Mars, there's a good possibility that wish could become a reality. Dr. Ellen Stofan, chief scientist with NASA, spent an hour "Skyping" with DA students on Nov. 25, and she told them they are at the right age to one day become astronauts on NASA's mission to Mars, a mission that's expected to take place 15 to 20 years from now. | Lower School, Upper School students' new partnership for Stop Hunger Now What does it feel like when you’re hungry? Does your stomach hurt or your head ache? Is it hard to concentrate in school when your stomach is growling? Those were questions Lower School students were asked Wednesday morning as part of an awareness effort by the Upper School’s Stop Hunger Now club. Upper school club members joined Lower School students in a first-time partnership to write letters and cards that will be included in packaged meals as part of Durham Academy’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19. This will be the sixth year that the DA community has held a meal-packaging event on the day school is closed to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Read More Dining Out for DA all month long at Aunt Serafina's & Dunkin' Donuts Take a break from the kitchen this holiday season and Dine Out for DA! During the month of December, both Aunt Serafina's Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts in the Hope Valley Commons Shopping Center will offer 10 percent of their sales (from members of the DA community) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays to Durham Academy Parents Association. Read More Four Cavs help club team to National Field Hockey Fest victory Four Durham Academy field hockey standouts shone on a national stage over Thanksgiving break, helping their club team to victory in the National Field Hockey Festival championship. Seniors Jordan Barry and Helen Morgan and juniors Lakin Barry and Sarah Hantzmon played with the 16-member Carolina All Stars Field Hockey team, which won the competitive U19 pool with a record of 5-0-1. Read More Fourth-grade 'Real Time Radio Show' is back for a new season The wildly popular podcast Serial isn’t the first radio-format show to have listeners counting the days until the next episode’s release. Durham Academy students have been doing it for years with their own radio saga, The Real Time Radio Show, and loyal Radio Show listeners will be pleased to hear that this year’s season premiere has just been released. “Winner Takes It All” – a yarn spun entirely from the imaginations of DA fourth-graders – chronicles the adventures of three teams competing in “a fast-paced race in the tropical land of Fiji.” The title of the season refers to the lifetime supply of pizza awaiting the victor of a “labyrinth of lies.” Read More Just in time for the holidays — DA's got an app for that! The communications office is excited to announce the release of Durham Academy's first-ever app! In recent contests our boys swim team defeated Jordan High School, and just this week both varsity basketball teams played valiantly in losing efforts to nationally-ranked Wesleyan Christian Academy.
