Spirit's Key author offers tips on writing,

handling rejection to Middle Schoolers

Think writing ability is a born-with-it or without-it trait? Think again, Edith Cohn — author of the wildly popular young adult novel Spirit's Key — told Durham Academy Middle Schoolers on Tuesday.

"It turns out that if you can write a sentence, you can write a novel," she said. "A novel is just a bunch of sentences."

Spirit's Key — the story of a 12-year-old girl who yearns for her father's gift of clairvoyance while mourning the death of her beloved dog — was published in September and is Cohn's first published work. Read More

Reptilian props delight at vet's

annual visit with Preschoolers

Big words, big numbers and a really big snake were components of an assembly at Durham Academy's Preschool on Wednesday. Athletic Director's Update: State

tournament play kicks off Friday

As Durham Academy's fall athletic season nears a close, there's plenty to cheer about, with five varsity Cavalier athletic teams beginning state tournament play in the coming days: cross country, girls golf, field hockey, boys soccer and girls tennis.

Mix It Up Day aims to expand

Upper Schoolers' comfort zones

Freshmen practiced capoeira alongside seniors, students guided their classmates into candid discussions about gender inequality and ethnicity, and dozens of new friendships were forged during Durham Academy Upper School's Mix It Up Day observance on Thursday.

Participation in previous years' Mix It Up Day activities was voluntary, with events taking place during lunch. While those observances attracted a healthy crowd of students, organizers wanted to get all students in the mix this year, so the event was held during an assembly period. Read More

Fall blood drive set for Oct. 21

There are few times in life when such a small act can make such a huge difference in the lives of others more than donating blood. That's the perspective of Durham Academy senior Caroline Wechsler, who has helped organize the Red Cross Club's Oct. 21 blood drive.

The drive kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs through 12:30 p.m. outside Kirby Gym. All members of the DA community (parents, faculty, staff and students) 16 and older are welcome to donate. To schedule an appointment time, email Wechsler or fellow senior and club co-leader Jackson Dellinger. Read More
