Chinese elementary school principals visit Lower School
Twenty-four primary school principals from Jiangsu Province, China, visited the Lower School Friday as part of a training program to study the U.S. education system. A similar delegation visited the Upper School last year. Both groups were accompanied by Brian White, associate director for China programs at the UNC Center for International Understanding. Upper School students volunteer thousands of community service hours, raise $13K Popular culture may tell us that America is "a nation of narcissists," but Anne McNamara, who oversees Durham Academy Upper School's community service efforts, sees it differently. "In 2013-14, the seniors alone gave over 5,000 hours of service. And [Upper School] students together raised more than $13,000 for charity," McNamara said at an early October assembly. "Individuals contributed to the Durham-Chapel Hill community through their churches, scouting programs and research foundations, and international needs get our attention." Read More Fourth-graders collect 82 lbs. of trash during DA's Big Sweep You wouldn’t think of Durham Academy as a trashy place and it’s not anymore thanks to the Big Sweep, a blitz of the Preschool, Lower School, Upper School campuses and athletic fields that removed 82 pounds of trash. Eighty fourth-graders and teachers combed 2.5 miles of DA grounds in an hour and 15 minutes and filled 12 kitchen-sized trash bags, including five bags of recyclable materials. The effort was part of Durham Big Sweep and N.C .Big Sweep, which in turn is part of a worldwide campaign to clean up the land and waterways. The DA blitz took place Sept. 26 as part of Lower School Unity Day. Durham’s “official” Big Sweep was Oct. 4, but any clean-up held in September and October is included in Durham Big Sweep.
