| Junior Rachel Hopkins named Youth Conservationist of the Year Sometime before her first lasting memory was made, Durham Academy junior Rachel Hopkins fell in love with frogs — and it wasn't the kind of devotion that culminated with a fleeting preference for toad-themed T-shirts. No, Hopkins knew her amphibian friends were in trouble, and she's spent years fighting for their survival, going so far as successfully establishing an annual North Carolina Save the Frogs Day. In recognition of her work, the N.C. Wildlife Federation named Hopkins the Governor's Youth Conservationist of the Year at its Sept. 6 awards gala.
