DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Some high school athletes helped out middle school students with technology – with the toss of a Frisbee this past weekend.

Durham Academy freshman Alex Hoffman organized the ultimate Frisbee tournament at his school as an Eagle Scout project.

Hoffman is using the money raised to help out students at Durham Nativity, a tuition-free independent school for middle school boys who can’t afford private school.

Hoffman found out that the school didn’t have enough up-to-date laptops and made it his mission to try to get enough so each student would have one.

“You’re expected to be able to know how to use a laptop and the services that come with it and so students that can’t and don’t really have experience with it are put at a disadvantage,” he said. “When I was told that they don’t really have modern laptops available for the students, they don’t even have enough of those to fit one class I thought that that was something I could help with and that would really improve the lives of the students.”

Hoffman worked with the Triangle Ultimate club to set up the tournament. Seven high school teams competed, each paying $225 to play.

Hoffman arranged with Lenovo to buy computers at reduced cost and he’s hoping enough money was raised over the weekend to cover a class of about 20.
