DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing garnered ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year laurels for the second-straight year, as announced Monday by Commissioner John Swofford and the conference office. Blazing and the Blue Devils paced the league with eight total selections to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Team.
Blazing became the second individual to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey in consecutive years since the award's inception in 2007.
A cultural anthropology and political science double major from Durham, N.C., Blazing collected her fourth All-ACC Academic honor. During the fall, she received the NCAA Elite 90 Award with the highest cumulative grade point average at the 2015 NCAA Field Hockey Banquet. She has been named to the Dean's List every semester during her career at Duke and was a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection each of the past two years. She was tabbed a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Scholar of Distinction for the third year last spring and appeared on the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the fourth time in her career.
On the field, Blazing guided Duke to the NCAA semifinals as the starting goalkeeper and the team's vice captain. She netted first team All-America and All-ACC accolades and was named a finalist for the Honda Award. Her .778 save percentage paced all ACC goalkeepers and ranked eighth in the country.
Blazing and seniors Hannah Barreca, Aileen Johnson and Amanda Kim were among the 13 players to receive both all-conference and all-academic team recognition in 2015. Johnson and Kim made their third career appearances on the all-academic squad while Barreca, Furey and Kristen were honored for the second-straight year. Junior forwards Robin Blazing and Heather Morris rounded out the Duke contingent with the first all-academic team accolades of their careers.
Lauren Blazing and Johnson represented two of the seven players on the All-ACC Academic Team to also earn All-America honors in 2015.
The Blue Devil program has totaled 68 All-ACC Academic Team selections since the award's inception in 2007, with at least six Duke field hockey student-athletes making the squad in each of the previous eight seasons.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
