Class of 2015 headed to 55 colleges

Congratulations to the Class of 2015 on making great decisions as to where they'll spend their next four years! Seniors wore college T-shirts to school on May 1, known nationally as College Signing Day, as a way of announcing their decisions.

Graduating seniors will enroll at 55 colleges and universities in all corners of the United States and running the gamut from small liberal arts schools to large flagship state universities.

K-1 chess team places sixth 

at national championship

Durham Academy's K-1 chess team competed in the 2015 National Elementary Chess Championships May 8-10 in Nashville, Tennessee, placing sixth overall and finishing just two team points away from a national championship. DA chess coach Craig Jones described the tournament as the most prestigious of all American scholastic chess events. Read More

 

Upper Schoolers to raise funds for

quake relief at carwash Saturday

When junior Tad Ghanem heard that a magnitude-7.8 earthquake had devastated Nepal, he knew he had to do something to help, for the tragedy was particularly personal for him and many other Upper School students. Spanish teacher Liliana Simón has many family members in Nepal through her husband, Suraj Dhungana, a native of the South Asian country. With the Simón-Dhungana family in their hearts, students will hold a quake relief carwash fundraiser on Saturday, May 16, from noon to 3 p.m. by the DA Middle School gym. Washes will be $5 for cars and $7 for trucks. Read More

Three of Durham Academy's varsity athletic teams — girls lacrosse, boys tennis and track and field — remain in the game for state titles as the school year and spring season draw to a close.

Third-graders experience 

modern-day immigration at RDU

Third-graders got a glimpse of how modern-day immigrants travel to America this week at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. And most agreed it was definitely easier than the turn-of-the-century Ellis Island simulation they experienced in March as part of their study of immigration. Read More

 

School store clearance sale will

run through end of school year

The Cavalier Supply Co.'s clearance sale has been extended to the end of the school year, with prices slashed by at least 20 percent on all apparel, school supplies and other DA merchandise — from Nalgene bottles and Under Armour sackpacks to bow ties and baby items. Read More

 

Middle Schoolers hone diplomatic

skills at Model UN Conference

For the fourth year, a dynamic group of Durham Academy Middle School students participated in the annual Triangle Model United Nations Conference held at Duke University in late April. The event involved students from a variety of North Carolina public, independent and charter schools, each of whom was assigned to one of seven committees representing the real branches of the United Nations (e.g., the World Health Organization, the Security Council and UNICEF). Read More

 

International students flock to 

DA camps, an Indy Week finalist

Nearly 1,200 children are expected to participate in Durham Academy Summer Programs this summer, including campers who come from halfway around the globe.

DA camps aren't just popular with the international set, though. The program is a finalist in Indy Week's Best Of the Triangle poll in the category of "Best Summer Camp in Durham." Read More
