Dear Colleagues, Families, and Students,
We are contacting you because today we learned that an Upper School student has tested positive for COVID-19. Since a positive test in the student’s household on Jan. 5, the student has been in quarantine at home and not on campus. The student was tested on Jan. 9, received results today, and is following all DA and Durham County Department of Public Health guidelines for isolation and return to the community.
Given the timing of the case and the responsible quarantining of the family, no students, faculty or staff were identified by DA as potential close contacts. HIPAA laws and CDC/DHHS guidelines limit what Durham Academy is able to share publicly.
As you know well by now, COVID-19 cases continue to increase in North Carolina and beyond. Please continue to be vigilant about potential exposures and gathering with people outside of your household. Practice mask wearing, social distancing and hand/face hygiene diligently.
If you or any family member displays symptoms of COVID-19, consult your physician and/or call the Durham County COVID-19 Hotline at 919-635-8150 (staffed Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m) or the NCDHHS Hotline at 1-866-462-3821. In the event of a positive diagnosis in any household, parents and colleagues should contact Gem Gates immediately, as per the DA Community Health Compact. We have also shared protocols that families should follow in the cases of COVID-19 diagnosis, symptoms or exposure here.
Once again, we recognize that these communications may stir anxiety for some and feel repetitive for others. In the continued interest of transparency and to underline our collective responsibility, we will continue to notify you about any confirmed positive COVID-19 cases among DA students, faculty or staff. We remain grateful for your continued transparency with the school.
