We hope you have caught your breath from an incredible fall athletics season. Believe it or not, basketball season is here, and both the girls and boys varsity hoops teams tipped off Wednesday night in Kirby Gym. We will have previews of both teams in next week’s Cavs Corner, and stay tuned to a future edition where we will preview the swim team. The AquaCavs will have their first meet on Nov. 20.
Varsity Girls Basketball
The girls varsity basketball team kicked off their season Wednesday night with a home game against the DSA Bulldogs. The Bulldogs quickly went up 6 points to start the game, but the Cavs battled right back with a 12-point run to gain control and pull ahead with the lead. Junior Amelia Kass led the Cavs with 13 points and six rebounds, while ninth-grader Joelle Davis added 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Claire Middleton was key in stopping the DSA offense from second-chance scoring opportunities, bringing down seven rebounds. All-over pressure from the Cavs' defense forced a number of turnovers that the team was able to capitalize on, outscoring the Bulldogs 45–38. The Cavs look forward to hosting their next game Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Southlake Christian Academy.

Varsity Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team, coming off a historic 28–4 season and a trip to the NCISAA 4A final four, opened the 2019–2020 season with a 72–30 win over Durham School of the Arts. The Cavs blitzed the Bulldogs early, storming out to a 39–5 lead as all 14 members of the squad saw playing time. Sophomore All-State player MJ Rice led all scorers with a 28 point, 11 rebound performance, while junior Toby Harris added 17 points on 4–6 from three-point range. The Cavs were blistering hot from the field as they finished the game shooting 67% overall and 20–24 from inside the arc. Sophomore Nik Graves had six assists as a trio of guards (Graves, junior Brent Randleman and eighth-grader Jayde Braswell) combined for 15 assists.
