Middle School Faculty Collaborate to Connect Students’ Interests with Modern History

Durham Academy’s sixth-grade history course focuses on how civilizations develop, and this year’s students are exploring indigeneous peoples of the Americas and the oppression that they have faced over the years. Thanks to a unique collaboration between history teacher Mike Harris and Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Engagement Jeff Boyd, students have taken a deep dive into the history of lacrosse among the Iroquois people. Further collaboration with PE teacher and boys lacrosse coach Jon Lantzy led to Kalen Bennett — a member of the Mohawk tribe and an accomplished lacrosse player — virtually visiting with Harris’ students.
