The Cavaliers are heading into the last two weeks of the regular fall season, and our teams have been busy. Not only are student-athletes competing multiple times a week, but they have also been participating in full program practices in which DA Middle School and JV teams join the varsity squad for a practice. The younger players are exposed to a varsity practice, and the Upper Schoolers get a chance to teach skill as well.

DA athletics is looking forward to celebrating the 30-year coaching career of varsity field hockey coach Judy Chandler on Friday at 6:45 p.m. The 2021 campaign will be her last, and DA will recognize Coach Chandler on Alumni Field ahead of the team’s game under the lights vs. Saint Mary’s School. We invite the community to join us in honoring Coach Chandler and all that she has given to our field hockey program!

This week’s performance of the week is highlighted by the girls cross-country team. DA girls cross-country has earned two first-place finishes — vs. North Raleigh Christian Academy and Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill last week and vs. Cary Christian and Saint Mary’s this week.

Girls Cross-Country

The team has been led by eighth-grader Audrey Crowder, who crossed the finish line in first place overall in both meets and ran a 21:38, 5,000-meter race last week. Crowder finished in second place overall two weeks ago at the Adidas Cross Country Challenge with a time of 20:37. Sophomore Allison Hall and ninth-grader Anna Tricomi have been vying for the No. 2 and 3 spots and ran faster races last week with times of 23:33 (Hall) and 23:58 (Tricomi).

Other runners who have contributed for DA girls cross-country include ninth-graders Ellen Pendry and Cate Everett, who crossed the finish line within 20 seconds of each other last week. Pendy and Everett placed eighth and ninth last week and sixth and seventh overall this week!

Girls cross-country coach Farrell O’Quinn is excited about her team captains and thrilled about the opportunities they have ahead of them.

“I am looking forward to seeing our captains [senior Emily Gao and junior Sara Lipsitch] grow into their leadership roles and further develop their voice on the team as captains,” O’Quinn said.  “As new captains this season, Gao and Lipsitch have already demonstrated strong leadership which is and will continue to be critical for establishing the identity of our young team.”

DA girls cross-country’s two first-place finishes bring the team total to three, and the Cavs hope to keep this momentum heading into next Tuesday’s Durham City-County Meet at home.
