Cavs Corner, Oct. 27

Durham Academy’s fall 2022 athletics season is shaping up to be one for the record books, including the girls golf program’s first-ever state championship and solid postseason runs by the girls tennis, volleyball and boys soccer teams. And it’s not over yet: The Cavs cross-country teams will compete in the state meet on Friday.

Cross-Country

Friday marks the final day of the fall athletics season, as the cross-country teams compete in the state meet at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro. The girls race will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the boys to follow at 11:30 a.m.

DA’s girls team is ranked fourth in the state, while the boys team is ranked third.

Results will be posted online after the races are complete.

State Tournament Recaps

VOLLEYBALL

The No. 2-seeded Cavs lost a heartbreaker in five sets to Cannon School on Tuesday night in the state semifinals. The girls played arguably their best volleyball of the season in the first three sets to take a 2–1 lead but then dropped sets four and five in tight fashion. This marked the fifth straight year that the Cavs and Cougars met in the state tournament, with DA taking semi-final wins in 2021 and 2019 and a quarter-final victory in 2018.

In Saturday's 3–0 win over Providence Day School, the Cavs fended off two PD set points in the first set to rally for a 26–24 win and then cruised 25–16 and 25–9 for the sweep.

GIRLS TENNIS

The No. 2-seeded girls tennis team had its 18-match win streak snapped at the hands of three-time defending state champion Charlotte Latin School on Tuesday. The Hawks knocked the Cavs out of the state tournament for the fourth straight year as they took a 5–0 win.

The semifinal matchup followed a quarter-final win over Ravenscroft on Saturday in which the Cavs used strong play to win matches at first doubles (sophomore Zara Miller / ninth-grader Danna Chaparro), second doubles (junior Godiya Mangai / senior Allison Preble), second singles (Miller), fourth singles (Preble) and sixth singles (sophomore Kathryne Hong).

BOYS SOCCER

On Saturday, the boys soccer team saw the 2022 season come to an end with a 3–0 loss to Charlotte Country Day School. While the boys did not play the way they would have liked, they finished a strong season with a conference title and a 13–4–1 record.
