After a hiatus for winter break, Durham Academy winter sports teams are back in action today. The DA swim team heads to North Raleigh Christian Academy for a 4:30 p.m. meet, and varsity basketball teams face Trinity Academy of Raleigh at home in Kirby Gym. It has been over a month since the swim team has faced outside competition and over two weeks since DA basketball teams have competed.
Today’s swim meet will be the first of two in the next six days for the DA boys and the first of three in the next eight days for the girls. It will also be a challenging stretch for the basketball teams, as they look forward to their first of four games over the course of the next nine days.
The varsity boys basketball team lost to Charlotte Latin 57–40 just before winter break. Latin was able to turn around an early deficit and run with the momentum to come out on top. The Cavs jumped out to an early 13–5 lead in the opening minutes. Senior Cole Sinclair kicked off the scoring for DA with a strong layup and 3-pointer to put the Cavs ahead. Senior Toby Harris contributed six more points by the end of the first quarter, but Latin went on a 16–0 run and never looked back.
Sinclair and Harris each had a quick flurry of points to try to bring the Cavs back, but it was not enough. Sinclair ended the game with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Harris had 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
The DA boys bounced back from the Dec. 18 defeat at Latin with a 75–54 win over Mt. Zion Christian Academy on Dec. 21 at Grace Christian in Sanford. The Cavs were led by the high-scoring senior duo of Sinclair (31 points, nine rebounds) and Harris (26 points, nine rebounds). DA also received contributions from ninth-grader Jayde Braswell (seven points, five rebounds, four assists) and sophomore Darren Bland (five assists and a steal). The team is back in action tonight, at home in Kirby Gym, against the Trinity Academy of Raleigh.
The varsity girls basketball squad faced three very strong opponents over winter break, but despite their efforts the DA girls couldn’t come away with a win. In a Dec. 18 road game at Charlotte Latin, eighth-grader McKenzie Graves took charge of the offense, putting up 20 points, two rebounds and three steals. Senior MK Bryant and sophomores Kendall Harris and Mariam Abdelbarr added baskets, but the Cavs fell 33–28.
The following day, the Cavs took part in the Winston-Salem Christian Showcase, but lost to the host team, 65–32. Graves again led the offense with 13 points and three rebounds. Abdelbarr contributed with nine points and four steals, ninth-grader Lauren Walsh had four points and three rebounds, and Harris added three points and seven defensive rebounds.
Dec. 21 was an exciting matchup with undefeated High Point Christian Academy, and the Cavs led the Cougars throughout the first half. However, early second-half energy from HPCA allowed it to close the gap, scoring eight unanswered points. The Cougars continued their scoring run, but the Cavs never gave up. In the final minute, the Cougars capitalized on a few free throws to pull ahead for a 47–41 win.
Harris and Abdelbarr were again keys to the Cavs’ success, finishing with 16 points and six rebounds and 14 points and five rebounds, respectively. On the defensive end, Walsh and Graves forced HPCA turnovers and found their teammates up the floor to create offensive opportunities. Walsh put up seven points and two assists, and Graves added two points, two rebounds and three assists. The Cavs are 2–4 on the season and look to bounce back in tonight’s nonconference game vs. Trinity Academy of Raleigh.
