Cavalier winter sports are on a brief hiatus until after the holidays. But prior to pausing for exams and winter break, the varsity boys and girls basketball and swim teams outlasted their opponents in their final matchups. Our basketball teams will return to the court in Charleston, South Carolina, at the Carolina Lowcountry Invitational beginning on Dec. 28. The teams will potentially have the opportunity to compete against programs from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. The boys will face Lucy Beckham High School from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in the first round, while the girls will tip off against Augusta Christian School from Martinez, Georgia.
DA varsity boys basketball had a successful outing vs. Wake Christian Academy on Friday night. The Cavs topped the Bulldogs 46–34, notching their second win in a row after defeating Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill earlier in the week. Juniors Jake Chisholm and Bryson Tupper led the offensive effort at the start of the game, attacking the rim and scoring at will inside. Despite facing a 6-foot-8 center, the Cavs were able to play well from inside the paint and out-rebound their opponent. At the end of the first half, the Cavaliers had a 21–15 lead with the help of Tupper and junior J.P. Dilweg, who provided strong support on both ends of the floor, totaling six rebounds each.
The third quarter proved to be just as one-sided as the first half. The Cavaliers began to pull away midway through the third quarter and outscored Wake Christian 10–7. The Bulldogs were unable to recover and were ultimately outscored 25–18 in the second half. Dilweg led the team in scoring with 12 points, nine rebounds and one block, followed by Tupper’s 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Another notable performance from Friday’s win was courtesy of ninth-grader Amare Burrus — who had six points, two assists and a block that came during a pivotal defensive possession in the fourth quarter. Friday’s win brings DA’s record to 4–8 on the year.
The Cavaliers will return to action the last week of December at the Carolina Lowcountry Invitational.
Friday night was an exciting evening in Kirby Gym, as the Cavs took on Wake Christian Academy in the first TISAC matchup of the season.
Quick transition offense gave the Cavs a healthy lead in the first half, with a 37–4 score at halftime. Junior Joelle Davis and ninth-grader McKenzie Graves were strong on both ends of the court, grabbing steals and converting Wake Christian turnovers to DA points. Davis finished the night with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Graves added in 12 points, seven assists and 10 steals.
On the defensive end, junior Kendall Harris and ninth-grader Rashyia Williams controlled the boards and kept the WCA offense away from second-chance baskets. Harris went 7-for-7 from 2-point range for her 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Williams grabbed 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and added in eight points.
Each rostered player contributed to the Cavs’ success, and DA walked away with the 58–11 final win. Moving to 5–6 on the season, the DA girls will compete in the Carolina Lowcountry Invitational over the winter break.
The Durham Academy girls swim team took first place in the third meet of the 2021 season against Saint Mary’s School — scoring 43 points, nine points more than the Saints. The DA boys team was scheduled to compete with Wake Christian, but the Bulldogs were unable to compete, so the Cavs swimmers raced one another, scoring a team total of 49 points. In the highlight of the meet, ninth-grader Bennett Harris set a new school record of 4:56 in the 500-yard freestyle. The individual results have not been received by the athletics department, but we will provide them on the teams’ webpages as soon as they are made available.
