Durham Academy is known as a leader in academic excellence, and our relentless pursuit of excellence drives everything we do. That drive earned DA a national reputation — one that has endured for more than 90 years. How we pursue excellence has evolved. The way we communicate who we are and what we stand for should, too. 

 

A school and a community that’s never been content to rest on its laurels should treat its visual identity the same way. Our brand should communicate the ways we prepare our students to confidently walk through the world and live moral, happy, productive lives — today, tomorrow and always. We’re more bold, more innovative, more future-focused than ever.

A Fresh Look

This brand refresh is the result of a listening tour over the past year — comprising dozens of input sessions and conversations with students, alumni, athletes, faculty, parents and staff spanning seven decades of DA experiences. It is because of their engagement and candor that Durham Academy's new look on the outside is such an authentic representation of who we are on the inside.

Among the most common themes from listening sessions over the past year was a desire for greater community connection, traditions and school spirit, especially from current students. It also became clear which existing brand elements were sacred to our community.

As a result, we're still the Cavaliers, we're still "DA," and we're still green and white — but with a fresh look that celebrates the school’s tradition of excellence, imagines the exciting journey ahead, and represents everyone in our community.

We're excited to introduce the Torch as our primary icon — a symbol of enlightenment, and representing the gold standard of academic excellence that Durham Academy is known for.

And we've defined the Cavalier as a mascot that all students can see themselves in. Blade is a Cavalier spaniel who embodies courage, loyalty and tenacity — values taught on every field and court, and in every classroom. 

Our new brand system also includes a fresh take on the iconic DA monogram and a suite of modern typefaces. In our updated color palette, you'll see slightly warmer shades of green and white, as well as a deep gold, reminiscent of the gold standard set by Durham Academy.

The refreshed brand is intended to close the gap between the outside perception of DA and the lived experience at DA: a community that is welcoming and diverse, innovative and rich in tradition, caring and courageous, challenging and supportive.

We are grateful for the partnership of Raleigh-based creative agency Baldwin& in both the discovery and the creative phases of this project. Uniquely positioned to help tell the story of Durham Academy is Ashley Yetman — co-CEO and director of brand strategy at Baldwin&, as well as a trustee and DA parent.

This brand family represents our Cavalier family — one that is definitively, and distinctly, Durham Academy.
