Tyson '05 wins Avery Fisher Career Grant
The Avery Fisher Artist Program announced May 15 that Durham Academy alumnus and acclaimed pianist Andrew Tyson '05 is one of five recipients of a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant. The $25,000 grants are given to promising working musicians who are identified early in their careers.

Harvard University junior Josh Zoffer '10, together with debate partner Benjamin Sprung-Keyser, won the American Parliamentary Debate Association's (APDA) national championships in Washington, D.C., April 19 to 20. Zoffer and Sprung-Keyser are the youngest team ever to win this title.

Mollie Pathman, a 2010 graduate of Durham Academy and a two-time All-ACC selection on the Duke University soccer team, is among 21 athletes chosen to train with the United States Under-23 Women's National Team.

Ward Nye ’81 to receive Durham Academy’s Distinguished Alumni Award
Durham Academy will honor Ward Nye ’81 as its Distinguished Alumni recipient on April 12 at the Spring Alumni Reception. Nye attended Durham Academy from seventh through 12th grades. He graduated from Duke University with honors in 1984, and in 1987 he received his law degree from Wake Forest University. Nye is president, chief executive officer and a board member of Martin Marietta Materials, Inc.

DA grad Jared Anderson releases his first solo album, Carolina Calls
Releasing an album is nothing new for 2012 Durham Academy graduate Jared Anderson, who’s now a freshman at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Anderson did an album with The Verge, a band he helped organize when he was a DA student. But releasing an album as a solo artist is new territory, and that’s what Anderson has done with Carolina Calls. The album came out in early December and features eight songs written and performed by Anderson.

Hey '09 selected as lacrosse team captain at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
David Hey, a 2009 Durham Academy graduate, has been named as one of three captains for the 2013 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team. Hey, a senior at RPI, played in all 15 of his team's games last season and tallied eight goals and six assists.

Mollie Pathman, a 2010 Durham Academy graduate and a junior on the Duke University women’s soccer team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America third team, which was released the week of Nov. 26 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ariel Blackshear-Tvrdy, a 2010 alumna of Durham Academy, represented Lawrence University at the National Philanthropy Day celebration in Appleton, Wis. National Philanthropy Day, celebrated Nov. 15, is a day dedicated to recognizing and paying tribute to the work made possible by philanthropy.

Evan Fjeld '07 signs with Swiss professional basketball team
Evan Fjeld, a 2007 graduate of Durham Academy, recently signed to play basketball with BBC Monthey, a professional team in Switzerland. Fjeld scored 16 points in his debut with the team, a 115-48 victory Oct. 27 in Geneva.

Fall Alumni Weekend 2012 brings Cavs together
Durham Academy welcomed alumni and friends back to campus for Fall Alumni Weekend Oct. 12 and 13. The festivities kicked off Friday night with an Alumni Pregame Social sponsored by Big Boss Brewery (Andrew King ’86 and Geoff Lamb’86). More than 125 alumni and their families gathered to grab a bite to eat and to exchange stories. After the social ended, the crowd moved to Alumni Field to cheer on the varsity boys soccer team in its homecoming match.

Homecoming is Friday, Oct. 12
Join alumni, families, friends and faculty at Durham Academy’s annual homecoming events on Friday, Oct. 12, at the Upper School athletic fields. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with moonwalks and Only Burger, Pie Pushers, American Meltdown and Local Yogurt food trucks. Please note that “DA charge” cannot be used for dinner purchases this year. Over 400 alumni, students, faculty and parents turned out for homecoming last year, and we expect another great event on Oct. 12.

In her first international field hockey competition, 2011 Durham Academy alumna Lauren Blazing made her presence known, helping the Under-21 U.S. Junior Women's National Team to a third-place finish in the Junior Pan-American Games and to a berth in the Junior World Cup.
