Parents Association

Students, faculty, staff and parents are invited to an ice cream social hosted by Parents Association on May 29 to bid farewell to Headmaster Ed Costello, who is retiring from Durham Academy after 14 years of service. The ice cream social will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the Upper School quad.

All Durham Academy parents are invited to the Parents Association General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Reception Thursday, April 25, at 8:10 a.m. in Brumley Performing Arts Building on the Lower School campus. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a special performance by Lower School students singing their favorite Morning Meeting songs. Parents will vote on the 2013-2014 slate of officers and school division representatives. 

Last call! Time is running out to straighten up your bookcases and bring in those books you’ve already read, your children have outgrown or that the kids have finished for class. The last day to donate books to the 2013 Used Book Sale is Thursday, April 4.  

Get ready for fun on Friday, April 26, when you and your family can enjoy watching the Durham Bulls take on the Toledo Mud Hens from the special section reserved for Durham Academy.

Each year the Middle School gym is transformed into a fabulous "used book store" with literally thousands of books for all ages, available for our students and families and then our greater community to purchase at very reduced prices. In order for this to happen, we need your help. We have a variety of opportunities that require no particular skills but lots of parent volunteers. The many opportunities to help are outlined below. Come join in the fun!  

Due to scheduling difficulties with the shortened hockey season, DA Night at the Hurricanes will not occur this year.  

When most people think of the Durham Academy Used Book Sale, they think of the Lower School students scouring the stacks for The Magic Tree House books and Middle Schoolers popping in between classes for snacks. All of this is thanks to donations of books made by DA families and all the volunteer hours put in by Parents Association and parent volunteers. What many don't realize is that those donations also end up benefiting the Durham community as well.

Don’t miss your chance to win DA’s Tuition Raffle! One lucky winner will receive $12,500 toward tuition at Durham Academy or any 501(c)(3) school or university for the 2013-2014 school year. 

The Durham Academy Parents Association would like to extend its thanks to the DA community for supporting the Innisbrook fundraiser so far this year. The catalog phase is complete, and by now those of you who ordered have received your wrapping paper and gift items. We hope you are delighted with your purchases. This school year, Durham Academy has raised more than $6,000 in support of DA’s academic, social, fine arts and athletic objectives through the Innisbook fundraiser.

The Used Book Sale brings to mind happy images of DA students and their family members pouring into the Middle School gym to find a literary favorite. Each year, DA families and the general public purchase more than 10,000 books donated by generous DA families.

It's not too late to trot! Registration for the Nov. 10 Turkey Trot 5K and Fun Run is open until race day. There are 325 runners, walkers, skippers, joggers and stroller-pushers signed up already. Come out and join in the fun.

The deadline has been extended and orders will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 12.
