Parents Association

The Durham Academy Parents Association supports the school's academic, social, fine arts and athletic objectives. The Parents Association encourages volunteerism, raises and disperses funds, promotes communication and cooperation, and provides input to the school on issues of concern and interest to parents.

Parents Association activities for 2012-2013 include an All-School Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 23; Dining Out for DA on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Thursday, Feb. 21; the Turkey Trot on Saturday, Nov. 10; the annual Benefit Auction on Friday, March 1; a Used Book Sale on Thursday, April 18, through Sunday, April 21; and DA at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on April 26. Ice cream social will honor Headmaster Ed Costello

Students, faculty, staff and parents are invited to an ice cream social hosted by Parents Association on May 29 to bid farewell to Headmaster Ed Costello, who is retiring from Durham Academy after 14 years of service. The ice cream social will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the Upper School quad.

All parents invited to April 25 volunteer appreciation reception and meeting

All Durham Academy parents are invited to the Parents Association General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Reception Thursday, April 25, at 8:10 a.m. in Brumley Performing Arts Building on the Lower School campus. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a special performance by Lower School students singing their favorite Morning Meeting songs. Parents will vote on the 2013-2014 slate of officers and school division representatives.

Each year the Middle School gym is transformed into a fabulous "used book store" with literally thousands of books for all ages, available for our students and families and then our greater community to purchase at very reduced prices. In order for this to happen, we need your help. We have a variety of opportunities that require no particular skills but lots of parent volunteers. The many opportunities to help are outlined below. Come join in the fun!

Please visit www.da.org/auction to preview items (updated daily), purchase fixed-price trips and experiences, view event sponsors and register your credit card. Durham Academy’s generosity goes a long way at Emily K

When most people think of the Durham Academy Used Book Sale, they think of the Lower School students scouring the stacks for The Magic Tree House books and Middle Schoolers popping in between classes for snacks. All of this is thanks to donations of books made by DA families and all the volunteer hours put in by Parents Association and parent volunteers. What many don't realize is that those donations also end up benefiting the Durham community as well.

Dining Out for DA set for Oct. 25

The first Dining Out for DA of the 2012-2013 school year will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Tutti Frutti, Pop's Backdoor South and Bull Street Gourmet, all located in Hope Valley Square in Durham. Each of these businesses will donate 10 percent of their sales to Durham Academy. Come out and enjoy good food with other DA families as we kick off the long weekend.
