| | Durham Academy believes strongly in the value of community service. Service to others, both on campus and in the larger Durham community, can significantly enhance the student's sense of responsibility, selflessness, self-reliance, compassion and respect for others. Community service contributions are regularly recognized and celebrated within our school community.
In the Preschool and Lower School, students engage in age-appropriate community service projects ranging from preparing sandwiches for the local soup kitchen to collecting pennies for a school in Africa. In the Middle School, the schedule regularly provides time for students and faculty to participate in both on- and off-campus service projects. These projects emphasize a "hands-on" approach to service, encouraging students to become more personally involved in their own surroundings and in other people's lives.
In the Upper School, the Community Service Program is designed as an educational process that encourages students to take increasing responsibility. Ideally, a student will have experiences with several different kinds of agencies serving children, the elderly, the poor or working with North Carolina's natural resources. Ninth graders participate in the designated projects during the first week of school. Tenth and 11th graders volunteer at the same community agency during four half-days spread across the school year. After completion of their junior year, seniors must work at least 15 hours with a community agency of their choice, and are strongly encouraged to do more. Augustine Project | Web Page: | View website | | Description: | The Augustine Project is a Chapel Hill based non-profit founded in 1994. Its mission is to train and support volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-on-one instruction in reading, writing and spelling to low-income children and teens who struggle with literacy skills. Economically and academically disadvantaged students in more than 90 schools and after school programs around the Triangle benefit from Augustine intervention.
At DA, 10 seniors may take a year long elective that trains them to use the project's research-based, multisensory, phonetic literacy curriculum, based on the Orton Gillingham approach. After a month of preparation, each DA tutor is paired with an Augustine child at Forest View Elementary School. To be eligible for tutoring, the child must qualify for free or reduced price lunch and perform below grade level in reading. Tutoring takes place at Forest View during E period on days 2, 3, 6, and 7. On the remaining days, the class meets at DA to plan lessons, to learn why some children have difficulty processing written language and to determine how best to remediate the problems. Seniors who enroll in the DA Augustine course earn community service credit. |
