The Durham Academy Parents Association supports the school's academic, social, fine arts and athletic objectives. The Parents Association encourages volunteerism, raises and disperses funds, promotes communication and cooperation, and provides input to the school on issues of concern and interest to parents.Parents Association activities for 2012-2013 include an All-School Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 23; Dining Out for DA on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Thursday, Feb. 21; the Turkey Trot on Saturday, Nov. 10; the annual Benefit Auction on Friday, March 1; a Used Book Sale on Thursday, April 18, through Sunday, April 21; and DA at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on April 26. |Ice cream social will honor Headmaster Ed Costello |
Students, faculty, staff and parents are invited to an ice cream social hosted by Parents Association on May 29 to bid farewell to Headmaster Ed Costello, who is retiring from Durham Academy after 14 years of service. The ice cream social will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the Upper School quad.

The date is set: the Fourth Annual DA Turkey Trot will be held Saturday, Nov. 16. Mark your calendar and plan on coming out for all the fun!
|All parents invited to April 25 volunteer appreciation reception and meeting|
All Durham Academy parents are invited to the Parents Association General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Reception Thursday, April 25, at 8:10 a.m. in Brumley Performing Arts Building on the Lower School campus. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a special performance by Lower School students singing their favorite Morning Meeting songs. Parents will vote on the 2013-2014 slate of officers and school division representatives.

Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m., you and your family are invited to watch the Durham Bulls take on the Toledo Mud Hens from the special section reserved for Durham Academy. As an added bonus, there are fireworks after the game!

Last call! Time is running out to straighten up your bookcases and bring in those books you’ve already read, your children have outgrown or that the kids have finished for class. The last day to donate books to the 2013 Used Book Sale is Thursday, April 4.

Each year the Middle School gym is transformed into a fabulous "used book store" with literally thousands of books for all ages, available for our students and families and then our greater community to purchase at very reduced prices. In order for this to happen, we need your help. We have a variety of opportunities that require no particular skills but lots of parent volunteers. The many opportunities to help are outlined below. Come join in the fun!

Durham Academy Parents Association will accept nominations through Feb. 15 for president-elect, secretary and division representatives for Preschool, Lower School, Middle School and Upper School for the 2013-2014 school year.
|Are you mad for the Benefit Auction?|
Mark your calendars and invite your friends to Durham Academy’s 34th Annual Benefit Auction. This year’s gala, “Mad Men of Durham Academy,” will be held Friday, March 1, at The Cotton Room in Durham’s historic Golden Belt district. Plan to “dress to impress” in 1960s-inspired attire or optional black tie.

When most people think of the Durham Academy Used Book Sale, they think of the Lower School students scouring the stacks for The Magic Tree House books and Middle Schoolers popping in between classes for snacks. All of this is thanks to donations of books made by DA families and all the volunteer hours put in by Parents Association and parent volunteers. What many don't realize is that those donations also end up benefiting the Durham community as well.

|Used Book Sale offers chance to give a book, change a community|
The Used Book Sale brings to mind happy images of DA students and their family members pouring into the Middle School gym to find a literary favorite. Each year, DA families and the general public purchase more than 10,000 books donated by generous DA families.
|Durham Academy goes ‘Mad’|
The benefit auction is one of Durham Academy’s most vibrant and exciting fundraising events, annually raising more than $100,000 in support of Parents Associations initiatives and programs. The 34th Annual Benefit Auction, “Mad Men of Durham Academy,” will be held Friday, March 1, at The Cotton Room in Durham. Mark your calendars and plan to bid high for some of the most exciting packages our event has ever offered! Featured items include trips to St. Maarten and the Mexican Riviera, box seats for a Carolina Hurricanes game, a lively New Orleans Cajun dinner party and a NASCAR driving experience.

The first Dining Out for DA of the 2012-2013 school year will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Tutti Frutti, Pop's Backdoor South and Bull Street Gourmet, all located in Hope Valley Square in Durham. It may have been a Sunday, but the Lower School playground still teemed with activity Sept. 24 as an estimated 1,000 members of the Durham Academy community enjoyed the school's annual All-School Picnic.
