Upper School Arts Curriculum

Durham Academy's Upper School Arts Curriculum allows students to specialize across a wide variety of fine arts and performance arts offerings to pursue their passion. Fine arts opportunities include advanced drawing, painting, mixed media, studio art and introductory ceramics classes, as well as AP Art History, AP Music Theory and AP Studio Art. Photography students can learn analog and digital still fundamentals, photojournalism, advanced editing skills, and narrative and documentary digital filmmaking.

Performance arts include audition and non-audition vocal and instrumental ensembles, as well as courses in music technology and sound design, acting and scene study, playwriting, screenwriting, stage management and direction, photography and video, and beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of dance. DA productions and students have been consistently selected as finalists for the Triangle Rising Star Awards, and won Best Ensemble for the school's production of Oklahoma! in 2013.

Highlights of the Upper School Arts program include a fall play, a winter musical, a winter and spring dance concert, and both winter and spring vocal and instrumental concerts. Art and photography students exhibit their work in a spring art show. Vocal and instrumental ensembles perform throughout the school year.

Many of DA's Upper School Arts faculty are working artists in their own right, and several have been regionally and nationally recognized for their artistic productions.
