Cindy Moore never doubted that she wanted to work with kids. "I was always a babysitter. I was always the person that the adults in my life left in charge of kids. I always have loved kids, even when I was a kid. I knew that I wanted to do something related to kids. I think I actually knew that it was either a psychologist or a pediatrician, and I was afraid of medical school."

Bundle Up Durham — an organization started by Durham Academy Upper School students that provides winter coats to children in need — has partnered with DA basketball to sponsor a coat drive and T-shirt sale surrounding the first varsity basketball home game Friday, Nov. 17.

Durham Academy's fall 2017 sports season came to a close on Saturday in the most thrilling of fashions — with a nail-biting, come-from-behind victory by the varsity girls tennis team in the state championship matchup. It's the first state title ever for DA's girls tennis program and the first state championship earned by any DA team since 2012.

Durham Academy's Board of Trustees has approved a multi-phased Middle School campus master plan that touches every building on the Academy Road campus. The plan creates new academic and community spaces, reorients the campus for cohesiveness and safety, and supports rather than inhibits the Middle School learning experience. When completed, this plan will transform the Middle School experience with a campus designed purposefully for the intellectual, developmental and physical needs of young adolescents.

The girls, all fifth-graders, live in all corners of Durham. They attend different schools, have different interests, face different challenges. But, most every day, you'll find the girls messaging one another to check in on how school is going, to send birthday wishes, to just say goodnight. They come cheer one another on at musical performances. They send each other letters when times get tough.

Maintenance foreman Randy Baker has been working at Durham Academy for 37 years and is the father of a DA graduate, but were it not for a head poking around the corner of the business office, Baker wouldn't be here at all.

The entire Durham Academy community will join together to raise funds for hurricane relief from Oct. 17 to 20 with a series of fundraisers. Please support students' efforts as you are able! All proceeds will be donated to One America Appeal to support recovery from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, with the exception of the Middle School's film screening; proceeds from that event will be split between One America Appeal and a foundation that supports residents of St. Maarten.

The Durham Academy Used Book Sale collection efforts are off to a terrific start! Many of the books that have been collected are particularly appropriate for Middle School readers, so the Used Book Sale committee will once again host a special Mini Used Book Sale and Bake Sale for Middle School students on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Karen Richardson doesn't remember a time when she wasn't singing. One of her earliest musical memories is sitting at the dining room table with headphones on — a 4-year-old listening to her mom and dad's records of Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and Ella Fitzgerald — "just singing to my heart's content" to music that only she could hear.

Math is not my strong suit. Far from it, in fact. Until just recently, I never had any real interest in pursuing it any further than schooling requirements; it was just one of those places where I lacked the motivation to give my best.

Over time, school mission statements can calcify; words that still reflect important school principles and values can feel a bit disconnected from the lived experience of those in the community. This year, we deconstructed our mission statement, re-identified its component parts and created new art with it — and in the process, defined what a "moral, happy, productive" life looks like, during a student's time at DA ... and beyond.

Each parent of a Durham Academy student is a member of Parents Association, and all parents are invited to learn about the many activities and initiatives of Parents Council (the governing body of the group) at one of two Parents Council Fairs: Friday, Sept. 7, in the Lower School's Brumley Performing Arts Building, and Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Middle School's Taylor Hall.

By using Durham Academy's iCal calendar subscriptions, parents, faculty and students can easily add continually updated event feeds to their calendar client of choice with just a few clicks. You may add as many or as few calendars — ranging from your child's class schedule or assignments, to division-specific activities and athletic team schedules, to Middle and Upper School rotational calendars — as you wish to any calendar client that accepts iCal feeds.

As you gear up for the new school year, be sure to stop by the Cavalier Supply Co.'s Back-to-School Sale, with all school supplies, DA apparel and gift items offered at a 15 percent discount. The sale will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 16, to Friday, Aug. 178, in the school store — located in the Upper School Learning Commons. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the week before the start of school.
An independent, coeducational day school, pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
