The fall season is officially over and with no rest for the weary, winter sports are already under way.
Posted Thursday, Oct 27, 2016 3:00:00 PM
The fall season is winding down, with only one event remaining before we transition to winter sports. The boys and girls cross country teams will be in action Friday afternoon in Greensboro for the state meet. This week marked the end of successful seasons for volleyball, golf, field hockey and tennis, and this week's Cavs Corner recaps their state tournament runs. Durham Academy was one of just two 3A schools (Providence Day being the other) that qualified all fall varsity teams for state tournament play. It truly was a successful fall for the Cavs!

We are winding down the regular season for Durham Academy's fall sports programs, and state tournaments are right around the corner. In this week's Cavs Corner, we continue to update our varsity teams' progress and look ahead to the final week of the regular season. This week, we also introduce our first "Durham Academy Sports Network" video interview, as members of our Middle School DASN club took some time this week to interview varsity cross country coach Costen Irons and members of the boys team.

Thank you to everyone — students, faculty, coaches, parents and all other supporters — who made Durham Academy's 2016 Homecoming event such a huge success. It began early Friday afternoon with the second annual All-School Pep Rally, which was attended by all faculty, staff and students and watched by more than 1,000 more online. The great display of school spirit continued with field hockey and volleyball games that afternoon and ended with an exciting 2-0 soccer victory before hundreds of students that night.

The entire student body is buzzing in anticipation about Friday's All-School Pep Rally! For the second consecutive year, all divisions will converge on Kirby Gym to show their school spirit, recognize all DA fall student-athletes and watch their teachers perform in a lip-sync competition. This is the only time during the course of the year that all students and teachers are in the same location at the same time — it's truly a spirited atmosphere.

With all students in grades 5-12 away on trips during some portion of the week, Durham Academy's athletics schedule is on pause. Some of the JV and Middle school teams are just getting going and are anticipating their first contests after Labor Day, while most varsity sports have had a handful of games and matches under their belt.

Durham Academy home volleyball matches are usually swathed in a sea of green and white, but expect big splashes of pink at the contests scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29. The third school color is a symbol of the JV and varsity teams' commitment to fighting breast cancer; these special matches are branded "Pink Out" in support of the Susan G. Komen foundation.

It seems like Andy Pogach is everywhere at Durham Academy — leading a Middle School advisory, teaching physical education to fifth- and eighth-graders, teaching an eighth-grade math class, coaching three teams and two different sports in fall and winter at the Upper School, coordinating spring sports at the Middle School and serving as assistant athletic director — and that's just the way he likes it. If you need proof that Pogach is always on the move, he wears a Fitbit-type device and says he logs 15,000 steps a day.

The spring athletic season is winding down with all Middle School and junior varsity teams completing their seasons within the next week, and all varsity teams making a final push toward post-season play. Both Middle School soccer and Middle School boys lacrosse are having terrific seasons with outstanding play from many of our young athletes. Our Middle School softball team, playing an abbreviated schedule, won its first game Wednesday, scoring the winning run in the team's final turn at bat!

There's a lot that goes into the three seconds between when Christy Cutshaw hurtles toward the edge of the diving platform and when she slips into the water with nary a splash. Throwing her arms down with force, she begins to flip. Tucks into the pike position. Spins once, twice, three times, taking notice of the water below each time. Unravels from her pike, her body as straight and vertical as a pin. Readies herself to enter the water — hands flat to make an opening for her body, creating only the tiniest of splashes. Oh, and it all happens while her synchronized diving partner performs each step at the very exact, same millisecond.

No matter the goal count at this weekend's Ultimate Frisbee tournament at Durham Academy, the true victor is already apparent: students at Durham Nativity School, which stands to establish a 1:1 laptop program with proceeds from the high-flying fundraiser.

Winter season competition officially ended with the NCISAA state swim meet on Monday, Feb. 22. The meet was postponed by snow from its original date, but our coaches and swimmers kept working, and we had several good outings at the event. Durham Academy had 26 swimmers qualify for this very competitive meet, with the boys team finishing in ninth place and the girls in 16th overall. The boys were led by Michael Li, who finished seventh in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the 50 freestyle. Michael also anchored several relay teams. On the girls side, the Cavs were led by Kelly Cunneen, who placed in the 50 free and the 200 free.
