In this week’s edition of Cavs Corner, we highlight the 7-0 varsity boys basketball team, which goes into December with an undefeated record and has cracked the News & Observer top-25 rankings. We also recap the season starts for the girls varsity basketball team and our varsity swim teams, while previewing the week ahead for all our teams.
Coach Tim McKenna’s varsity boys basketball team has traversed a tough November schedule unbeaten and heads into the month of December with a slew of accolades for strong play. Led by senior Jorden Davis, who is averaging 25 points per game, the Cavaliers have already defeated three schools that handed them losses a year ago. Wins over ranked teams Riverside and Voyager have vaulted the Cavs into the N&O’s top-25 rankings and have even earned them a top-10 state private school ranking by NCpreps.
Davis notched a milestone in the 59-50 win over Voyager when he went over the 1,000-point career, becoming the eighth boys basketball player in school history to join this exclusive club. Not only is Davis the Cavs’ leading scorer, but he leads the team in assists, with 3.3 assists per game. The Cavs have also received major contributions from Nick Beischer (7.7 ppg / 7.6 rpg), Charlie Mendys (8.7 ppg) and Jack McCallie (6.6 ppg and 43 percent from 3-point range). In Tuesday night’s 74-44 win over the Durham Flight, all 12 players scored baskets, as both Joey Savarino (6 points) and Xavier Nonez (4 points / 4 assists) scored career-highs.
While the boys already have 3A victories over Southlake Christian, Hickory Grove and Covenant Day School — all three teams that will battle with DA for a state playoff spot — this weekend’s trip to Charlotte will prove very pivotal as the Cavs are looking for a second straight trip to the state tournament. On Friday night, DA will battle Charlotte Latin in a gym where the Cavs have not won in over three decades. The following afternoon, defending state champ Providence Day and their two major guard recruits will be the opponent. This weekend starts a string of 11 consecutive games away from Kirby Gym before the Cavs return home in January.
This weekend’s Charlotte trip will also present two big challenges for the girls varsity team, as both Charlotte Latin and seven-time defending state champs Providence Day are highly ranked. Cavalier junior Izzy Strigel has been the team’s scoring leader throughout the season, having averaged 21 points per game for the 4-3 Cavs. It was her 26 points that led DA to a 39-30 home win Tuesday over the Durham Flight. The Cavs also received six points and eight rebounds from Nicole Riepl and 6 points and 11 rebounds from Imani Spence.
Boys and Girls Swimming
Our boys and girls varsity swim teams, competing for the first season under coach Bud McLernan, lost their opening meets to Jordan High School but turned in some impressive performances in the pool. In the boys’ 160-98 defeat, sophomore Clayton Heard was the winner in the 100 freestyle, while sophomore Jack Anderson (200 free) and seventh-grader Stewart Roessler (500 free) each finished second in their race. In the girls teams’ 162-101 loss to Jordan, senior Kelly Cunneen (200 free and 500 free), seventh-grader Aly Eward (200 IM), sophomore Haley Leversedge (500 free) and eighth-grader Zoe Hannan (100 breast) all finished second in their races. The Aqua Cavs have meets today at North Raleigh Christian Academy and Tuesday at Ravenscroft to finish out 2016.
JUNIOR VARSITY & MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATES
Our junior varsity and middle school basketball teams are off and running as well. The boys JV team has won four in a row after an opening night loss to Riverside. In Wednesday’s 45-30 win over Henderson Collegiate, sophomore Shaffer Woody led the Cavs with nine points.
The girls JV team is 1-2 after Wednesday’s loss to Henderson Collegiate. Both JV teams are back in Kirby Gym on Tuesday against Cary Christian. Both Middle School boys teams went on the road Tuesday to Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill — and while they came away with losses, there were a lot of positive moments. The white team, led by Toby Harris’ 12 points, had a seven-point lead at halftime in their 52-43 loss. Coach Jon Lantzy was encouraged by his green team’s outing in their 13-point loss. Both teams will play Duke School and Trinity before winter break. Our girls middle school teams will open their seasons next week as well.
BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS
Finally, continuing a strong program from last year, the Parents Athletic Council will host another “Breakfast of Champions” on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Kirby Gym. We want to invite all Upper School students to attend this informal gathering that will feature Duke University student-athletes speaking about their lives in college. The title for this event is: “Be-YOU–tiful: Expanding What Defines You.” The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and a light breakfast will be served. Any student interested in attending should RSVP to BofCDA@gmail.com.
