Susan Ellis played for UNC's legendary women's soccer team for four seasons and won four national championships, an impressive accomplishment that becomes downright jaw-dropping when you discover Ellis didn't set foot on a soccer field until her senior year in high school.

Durham Academy alumna Sarah Treem '98 — an award-winning playwright and television showrunner — and Dennis Cullen — who has touched thousands of students' lives in his long career as an Upper School math teacher and cross country and track coach — have been honored with DA's Distinguished Alumni Award and Faculty & Staff Legacy Award, respectively. The awards were presented by the DA Alumni Board at the April 28 Spring Alumni Reception.

The spring season is winding down and unfortunately, wet weather cost many varsity teams the opportunity to play earlier this week. While we may not have games to recap for every team, we will look ahead to what each team has to do to finish their season strong.

There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season, and our spring sports teams are preparing for their stretch runs. A number of our teams sit at or near first place in the conference standings and are looking to close out conference titles and position themselves for a good state tournament seed.

When Tim McKenna's basketball teams break at the end of practice or after a game, the players and coaches always say "family." Developing a sense of family is what it's all about for McKenna, whose 188 victories make him the winning-est coach in Durham Academy varsity boys basketball history.

It has been more than four years since a Durham Academy varsity team has won a state championship. Certainly, there have been plenty of chances from great teams making runs to the state finals in the seasons since, but no team since the 2012 field hockey squad has brought home a state championship trophy. But there is a lot of excitement in the air this spring, as a few teams have state championship aspirations and look to add a banner to Kirby Gym.

The winter season has come to a close for DA's eight Cavalier basketball teams and our swim team will send more than 20 swimmers to Monday's state meet. In this week's Cavs Corner, we recap the final week of the season for the varsity basketball teams. Both had their seasons come to an end Tuesday night in Kirby Gym in the first round of the state tournament. This week's issue also highlights the accomplishments of the six other DA basketball teams.

We have come to the end of an exciting and successful winter sports season and with this week's warm weather, our thoughts are starting to turn to the spring season. Our swimmers and basketball players are ready to tell you "not so fast!" as the post-season is only a few days away.

What a night it was last Friday in Kirby Gym! Both varsity basketball teams achieved milestone accomplishments in front of one of the largest and loudest crowds in the four-year history of Kirby Gym.

Dr. Greg Dale, a nationally known sport psychologist, will speak at Durham Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The event — "How to Be a Good Parent of a High School Athlete" — will be held at Brumley Performing Arts Building on DA's Lower School campus (3501 Ridge Road). Parents of all ages of student-athletes are encouraged to attend, and students are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.

The winter season teams are starting to take a turn toward the home stretch, and both varsity basketball teams are jockeying for position at the top of the TISAC standings. It is a busy week, as both teams play three games, including Friday night's Middle School Night at the CavDome vs. Ravenscroft. The swim team will travel to North Raleigh Christian Academy for its final regular season meet this afternoon.

Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, DA will play host to Preschool/Lower School Night at the CavDome; the Cavalier Invitational Debate Tournament; In The Pocket's Nicaragua Benefit Concert; DA's annual MLK Day of Service meal-packaging effort; and a book-signing with alumnus Derek Rhodes '11.
