Both varsity basketball teams are off to great starts for the 2017-2018 season. The boys team is 3-1 and the girls are 2-1 heading into Friday night's showdown with Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School from Georgia.

Winter sports are underway as both varsity basketball teams opened their seasons with home wins over Durham School of the Arts on Wednesday. In this week's Cavs Corner, we preview our varsity basketball teams as both look to match or improve on last year's No. 8 seeds in the state tournament.

Seven alumni athletes and one coach will be inducted into Durham Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Dec. 1. This marks the third class of inductees for the Athletic Hall of Fame, which was established in 2013 and will tap new members every other year.

Durham Academy's fall 2017 sports season came to a close on Saturday in the most thrilling of fashions — with a nail-biting, come-from-behind victory by the varsity girls tennis team in the state championship matchup. It's the first state title ever for DA's girls tennis program and the first state championship earned by any DA team since 2012.

We are just four days away from the start of winter sports. However, before the basketballs bounce in Kirby Gym and the swimmers dive into the Campus Hills pool, two varsity Cavalier fall teams will be competing for state championships this weekend.

It is Spirit Week at the Upper School and our entire school is preparing for the All-School Pep Rally on Friday. (Parents are invited to watch the live-stream here beginning at 1:20 p.m. ) Our teams are winding down the regular season and looking ahead to their state tournaments, which begin next week for most teams. We hope you can come out to support our volleyball, field hockey and soccer teams as they host Homecoming games on campus Friday. There will be food trucks and fun surrounding the 6 p.m. soccer game against North Raleigh Christian on Alumni Field.

Most of our varsity sports team are finishing their first run through conference play and are set to battle for conference crowns and state tournament positioning in the final two weeks of the regular season.

While the rain kept some of our teams out of competition on Tuesday, we did just complete our busiest week to date of the fall 2017 season. Besides our Middle School teams opening up their seasons, our varsity teams continue to have fine seasons and look forward to the conference season that awaits. In this week's Cavs Corner, we look back on the past week in varsity sports and make an important announcement regarding our Fall Varsity Athletic Awards Program.

After three weeks of our varsity teams being "full steam ahead," we have come to an "all-stop" for a week of trips. All students in grades 5 to 12 will spend at least some part of this week off-campus on a class trip. While a few sports may have practiced early in the week, none of our teams had competitions and they will come back from Labor Day ready to dive back in to the meat of their schedules.

Susan Ellis played for UNC's legendary women's soccer team for four seasons and won four national championships, an impressive accomplishment that becomes downright jaw-dropping when you discover Ellis didn't set foot on a soccer field until her senior year in high school.

Durham Academy alumna Sarah Treem '98 — an award-winning playwright and television showrunner — and Dennis Cullen — who has touched thousands of students' lives in his long career as an Upper School math teacher and cross country and track coach — have been honored with DA's Distinguished Alumni Award and Faculty & Staff Legacy Award, respectively. The awards were presented by the DA Alumni Board at the April 28 Spring Alumni Reception.

The spring season is winding down and unfortunately, wet weather cost many varsity teams the opportunity to play earlier this week. While we may not have games to recap for every team, we will look ahead to what each team has to do to finish their season strong.
