Middle School Curriculum

Durham Academy's Middle School begins with grade 5 and continues through grade 8, enrolling 375 students on its Academy Road campus. DA has a consistent philosophy - prepare our pre-teen and teenaged students for the challenges ahead academically, and support them personally on their path to maturity. Our 22-acre campus allows Middle School students to explore, imagine, and create in facilities set apart from the social pressures of older students.

Middle School marks a series of "firsts" - transitioning from a self-contained classroom to an individualized schedule, embarking on an overnight trip that provides experiential education and helps promote a sense of community, and joining an advisory group with a faculty mentor who supports students academically and socially.

Students develop habits of learning that define them as students and discover their passions, with a rotating schedule that allows them to challenge themselves through core courses and electives listed below. Middle school students experience all five fine arts during their first two years, with the ability to study a full semester of two fine arts selections in seventh grade and and a full year of their fine arts selection in eighth grade. Students also participate in competitive intramural teams and interscholastic teams in 12 different sports.

DA's Middle School has also adopted a 1:1 iPad Learning Program, incorporating technology throughout the academic program to enhance learning. The program earned Durham Academy recognition as an Apple Distinguished School in 2013 and again in 2016.

An independent, coeducational day school, pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
