As chair of Durham Academy's Building and Grounds Committee, Laura Horton Virkler '91 has a major role in the transformations taking place on the Upper School campus and in the planning stages at the Middle School. She has a background in business, has lived in Mexico and Singapore, and believes people must work together to help others and make a difference.

We are just four days away from the start of winter sports. However, before the basketballs bounce in Kirby Gym and the swimmers dive into the Campus Hills pool, two varsity Cavalier fall teams will be competing for state championships this weekend.

The girls, all fifth-graders, live in all corners of Durham. They attend different schools, have different interests, face different challenges. But, most every day, you'll find the girls messaging one another to check in on how school is going, to send birthday wishes, to just say goodnight. They come cheer one another on at musical performances. They send each other letters when times get tough.

Maintenance foreman Randy Baker has been working at Durham Academy for 37 years and is the father of a DA graduate, but were it not for a head poking around the corner of the business office, Baker wouldn't be here at all.

Durham Academy Upper School is thrilled to present its upcoming fall production, Almost, Maine, from Oct. 26 to 28, 2017. Playwright John Cariani describes it as a "play about real people who are really, truly, honestly dealing with one of the toughest things there is to deal with in life: love."

Members of the DARC SIDE, Durham Academy Upper School's award-winning robotics team, are lending their engineering skills to the N.C. Botanical Garden's Pumpkins in the BOOtanical Garden event, and they'd love to see lots of DA families there!

It is Spirit Week at the Upper School and our entire school is preparing for the All-School Pep Rally on Friday. (Parents are invited to watch the live-stream here beginning at 1:20 p.m. ) Our teams are winding down the regular season and looking ahead to their state tournaments, which begin next week for most teams. We hope you can come out to support our volleyball, field hockey and soccer teams as they host Homecoming games on campus Friday. There will be food trucks and fun surrounding the 6 p.m. soccer game against North Raleigh Christian on Alumni Field.

Information is a prerequisite of a meaningful democratic society, and the letters FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) are at the heart of Adam Marshall's work. As the Knight Litigation Attorney at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Marshall, a 2007 graduate of Durham Academy, is dedicated to protecting the First Amendment freedoms and newsgathering rights of journalists. Forbes magazine named recognized Marshall as one of its "30 Under 30" in media for his work launching an online legal guide for reporters and promoting government transparency.

The entire Durham Academy community will join together to raise funds for hurricane relief from Oct. 17 to 20 with a series of fundraisers. Please support students' efforts as you are able! All proceeds will be donated to One America Appeal to support recovery from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, with the exception of the Middle School's film screening; proceeds from that event will be split between One America Appeal and a foundation that supports residents of St. Maarten.

Jean Coene was just 3½ years old when she began attending a small preschool within walking distance of her home in suburban Manila. It was run by Jesuit nuns, and her teacher set Coene on a path that would be her life's work.

Most of our varsity sports team are finishing their first run through conference play and are set to battle for conference crowns and state tournament positioning in the final two weeks of the regular season.

The entire Durham Academy community — students, parents, siblings, faculty and staff — is invited to attend the All-School Picnic, set for Sunday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Lower School grounds. For new families and old, the All-School Picnic is a great way to meet members of the DA community, reconnect with old friends and enjoy a Sunday afternoon.

The Durham Academy Used Book Sale collection efforts are off to a terrific start! Many of the books that have been collected are particularly appropriate for Middle School readers, so the Used Book Sale committee will once again host a special Mini Used Book Sale and Bake Sale for Middle School students on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

While the rain kept some of our teams out of competition on Tuesday, we did just complete our busiest week to date of the fall 2017 season. Besides our Middle School teams opening up their seasons, our varsity teams continue to have fine seasons and look forward to the conference season that awaits. In this week's Cavs Corner, we look back on the past week in varsity sports and make an important announcement regarding our Fall Varsity Athletic Awards Program.

Karen Richardson doesn't remember a time when she wasn't singing. One of her earliest musical memories is sitting at the dining room table with headphones on — a 4-year-old listening to her mom and dad's records of Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and Ella Fitzgerald — "just singing to my heart's content" to music that only she could hear.

Math is not my strong suit. Far from it, in fact. Until just recently, I never had any real interest in pursuing it any further than schooling requirements; it was just one of those places where I lacked the motivation to give my best.
